The Los Angeles Rams are set to draft Cal QB Jared Goff with the #1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft tonight. After that...well, there's at least going to be a lot of waiting.
While drafting Goff immediately re-charts the course for the NFL's 32nd-ranked offense in 2015, it doesn't address the rest of the offense. That says nothing of a defense that has lost a key starter at every level in DE Chris Long, MLB James Laurinaitis, CB Janoris Jenkins and FS Rodney McLeod this offseason.
So heading into tonight, how is the roster and depth chart looking?
QB
Case Keenum, Nick Foles, Sean Mannion
It's not pretty, hence Goff.
RB
Todd Gurley, Tre Mason, Benny Cunningham, Malcolm Brown, Zach Laskey
I wouldn't count out a day 3 selection here only because it's #Fisherball.
WR
Tavon Austin, Kenny Britt, Brian Quick, Stedman Bailey, Bradley Marquez, Isiah Ferguson, Kain Colter
Can the Rams get through this draft without adding another WR?
TE
Lance Kendricks, Cory Harkey, Justice Cunningham
Between this and the WR corps, I'm not sure which is a bigger need on talent alone.
OT
Greg Robinson, Rob Havenstein, Andrew Donnal, Isaiah Battle, Darrell Williams
...between GRob's Magical Unending Supply of Potential and the depth, this could pop up as a need to look at again in 2017 if things don't come together.
OG
Rodger Saffold, Jamon Brown, Garrett Reynolds, Cody Wichmann, Brian Folkerts
Does it worry/confuse anybody else that this looks like the best OL group on paper for the Rams?
C
Tim Barnes, Demetrius Rhaney, Eric Kush
The 2016 NFL Draft center class is shaping up to be one of the best in long memory. It would be a shame if Goff prevented them from dipping a toe in those waters.
DT
Aaron Donald, Michael Brockers, Ethan Westbrooks, Louis Trinca-Pasat, Doug Worthington
Brockers is set for free agency in a season. This is a fine group for 2016, but with Donald deserving of a mammoth payday soon...well, it's gonna be a big issue soon.
DE
Robert Quinn, William Hayes, Eugene Sims, Quinton Coples, Matt Longacre
With Long gone, we've seen the first crack in the wall. Hayes and Sims were re-upped, but this to is coming to the fore in a year's time.
LB
Alec Ogletree, Akeem Ayers, Bryce Hager, Cameron Lynch
If you toss Mark Barron in this group, it doesn't look as bad. But make no mistake. This is an injury away from a really uncomfortable plug-in.
CB
Trumaine Johnson, E.J. Gaines, Lamarcus Joyner, Coty Sensabaugh, Marcus Roberson
No, YOU try and predict how this is gonna work out.
S
T.J. McDonald/Tim McDonald, Jr., Mark Barron, Maurice Alexander, Cody Davis, Christian Bryant
This isn't going to be the problem, barring injury.
ST
Greg Zuerlein, Johnny Hekker, Chase Reynolds, Jake McQuaide
This isn't going to be the problem, barring injury. Hey, two of em!
So it is. The Rams have some clear needs for the immediate Goff-led future as well as some they could address ahead of time this weekend. How would you rank the Rams' needs going into tonight?
