QB has been a position of need for the Rams for going on a half decade now. Jeff Fisher's decision to hitch his carriage to Sam Bradford blew up in his face more than once. After swapping Bradford for Nick Foles last season, the Rams QB play deteriorated further....to the point where Fisher and Snead were professing their love for Case Keenum.
Fast forward a few weeks and suddenly the Rams sit atop the draft board. What did Mocking the Draft's Dan Kadar do with the first pick in his most recent mock?
1. Los Angeles Rams - Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State
Any debate about whether or not the Rams gave up too much to move all the way up to the No. 1 pick in the draft is futile. The debate about which top quarterback they'll take with this pick is not. NFL media insiders seem split between Wentz and Jared Goff of California. You'd think the Rams know who they want, but they're scheduled to meet with both before the draft in less than two weeks. Do they go with the perceived upside and size of Wentz or the savvy of Goff? The choice right now is Wentz, but maybe we'll get a little more intel about the pick before the draft.
Other options - Goff is seriously the only other option.
The Rams front office has shown with the Tavon Austin and Greg Robinson selections in recent seasons that they're willing to value ceiling over floor in regards to drafting. Considering that the jury is out on both of those players, it's easy to debate the effectiveness of that strategy. If Fisher and Snead stick with their recent drafting style, Wentz would be the selection.
