ESPN In$ider took some time to break down the best wide receivers by category. Fortunately for the Rams, Tavon Austin made the list according to the panel. Austin made the list for being the “Toughest to tackle in space”.
This guy is lighting quick with the sudden burst/acceleration to break the ankles of defenders. We can see that in the return game too. You don't see many guys with his lateral speed, vision and the ability to stop and start on a dime. Good luck breaking down and trying to wrap this guy up in space.
There's a reason the Rams utilize Austin in multiple alignments and schemes. He will play in the slot, align outside of the numbers, carry the ball out of the backfield and make plays off the jet sweep. Even the simple bubble screen is going to put stress on the defense because Austin can find daylight and then embarrass tacklers once he gets up the field.
Unfortunately for the Rams, the Atlanta Falcons have a wide receiver who was on the list twice in Julio Jones. Jones was labeled as “toughest to cover” and “toughest to cover deep”. Jones has been one of the best receivers this season, helping the Falcons lead the NFC South at 7-5.
However, the Rams may be lucky and Julio Jones is a game-time decision against the Rams. In addition, based on the latest injury report, the Rams are expected to get Tavon Austin back this week, in time for a home game in the Pacific Time Zone. With the Rams gaining back such a talent like
Tyreek Hill Tavon Austin back into the fold, let’s hope for some better offense.
In Jeff Fisher and Rob Boras we trust.
