The Los Angeles Rams take on the New England Patriots in Week 13 in a game offering an obvious Tom Brady-Jared Goff juxaposition.
The oddsmakers are coming down pretty hard on which side of that juxtaposition they’re leaning on with the Rams opening as 13.5-point underdogs.
With the Patriots sitting at 9-2 while the Rams have lost six of their last seven games to fall to 4-7, the records alone speak volumes about how 2016 has gone for both teams. If there’s something to soften the spread, I could point to two aspects.
One is the sheer fact that Jared Goff has only played two games which simply isn’t enough to have much certainty of what he is capable of in terms of running the offense. In the first half against the New Orleans Saints last week, Goff went 12/20 for 167 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. In his three other halves of professional football? He’s 25/43 for 181 yards with 0 touchdowns and a pick. I think it’s relatively impossible to know how much of the rest of 2016 will give us more of 1st half Saints Goff and how much will be other Goff.
The other aspect that could soften up the line in the Rams’ favor is the injuries to Brady and Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski. Even if both play, the fact that they could be in action at something less than 100% could be a huge factor, especially if the Rams defense we’ve seen for most of the season (though sure as hell not last Sunday) shows up.
