Given the way that #1 overall pick Jared Goff has been handled since being drafted, there are many conspiracy theories for why he hasn't played. Some fans are saying Jeff Fisher benched him purely for job security purposes. Others are already labeling him a bust. There are also fans that are blaming QB coach Chris Weinke.
I think it's safe to place former Rams RB Eric Dickerson in that last category. Here is what Dickerson had to say in a recent SiriusXM interview.
"Show me your history. What history do you have working with quarterbacks, developing quarterbacks? Then I can believe. And I just believe that they don't have the right coaches in place for him, and that's what it comes down to."
Unfortunately for Dickerson, a quick Google search shows you the history that Weinke has.
Even though Weinke is only in his second year with the Rams, he has plenty of experience. Prior to his stint with the Rams, Weinke spent four years as the director of the IMG Academy football program where he helped the likes of Cam Newton, Russell Wilson and Ryan Tannehill prepare for their own journey at the next level.
So that's an NFL MVP in Cam Newton and a QB who has led his team to two Super Bowls in his five year career (Russell Wilson). That's not a lengthy history by any means, but he certainly has helped develop some elite talent at the QB position.
As long as Jeff Fisher doesn't micromanage the coaching aspect itself, I honestly believe that Weinke can take Goff's 'of the charts' and turn it into something much greater than what Case Keenum was giving the Rams.
