In a response to Pro Football Talk covering an offer from the Washington Football Club, free agent safety Donte Whitner tweeted that the Los Angeles Rams were one of two teams to offer him a contract earlier this year:
@ProFootballTalk btw I was offered a deal from the Rams and the panthers.— DonteHitner (@DonteWhitner) October 4, 2016
In early April, we had news that Whitner was visiting the Rams. That was followed by Whitner adjusting his social media follows and some subtle/not-very-subtle indications in early May he would be signing with the Rams.
With S Rodney McLeod leaving in free agency to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles, the depth chart at safety had an obvious hole. The Rams have since promoted from within, escalating Maurice Alexander and Cody Davis.
Whitner would have made plenty of sense for the Rams as a physical, downhill safety who grew from a 1st-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft into a Pro Bowl enforcer from 2012-14.
No word on what ultimately prevented his signing with LA.
