It's as bad as feared, per Jim Thomas in the Post-Dispatch.
E.J. Gaines is out for the season after having surgery to repair a Lisfranc foot injury suffered the first weekend in camp.
Gaines injured his foot on just the second practice of training camp. His departure shakes things up at the cornerback position having started 15 games last year.
It immediately puts some pressure on fellow second-year defensive back Lamarcus Joyner. With Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson heading into their peak as this begins their fourth years of their careers, Joyner and Gaines are just getting started. Where Gaines has hit a major setback with this foot injury, Joyner had various injury troubles of his own that left him behind the learning curve.
It also opens the door for the depth at the position. Brandon McGee is still well-liked by the staff. Marcus Roberson has picked up time. Imoan Claiborne had some good reps on Friday against the Raiders. Montell Garner is going to get some time this week. And the team signed Trovon Reed over other options after Gaines went down for a reason. Should the Rams opt to go with six cornerbacks again, one of the new names would be included.
For today, we wish Gaines the best of luck and hope comes back in 2016 no worse for wear. He deserves as much.
