Daren Bates epitomizes that the Rams have been building in Jeff Fisher / Les Snead era. He gives 110% - which is sometimes too much- and is known for his special teams prowess. He offers some versatility as a backup and has a penchant for physicality as well, which is always a plus on this imposing defense.
Roster Battle
3k succinctly summed up the LB positions in the Marshall McFadden preview last week. Bates is at the bottom of the totem pole of established LBs on the roster behind James Laurinaitis, Alec Ogletree, Akeem Ayers, and Jo-Lonn Dunbar. He will have to hold off everyone else to secure his roster spot.
Expectations
Look for Bates to continue being a special teams stud while increasing his leadership role for John Fassel. He saw 11 snaps on Defense last season, but I don't thing an expanded role is in store. The only way Bates has an increased role in 2015 will be because of injuries (knock on wood).
Chances of Making Roster (8/10)
Bates is about as safe as a special teams player can be. He has shown that he can make big plays, has leadership, and doesn't mind doing the dirty work on special teams. Barring a strong charge from another youngster or him being possessed by Ray Ray Armstrong, he'll be on the squad.
Being an Auburn product doesn't hurt either.....
