Time for the last pick ahead of the Rams. Don't do us wrong, Rammer18-84:
#9, New York Giants - Danny Shelton (DT, Washington)
With the #9 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft the N.Y. Giants take Danny Shelton , DT , Washington . News flash : Spags needs help ! The Giants were the worst team in the league last year against the run . Having a 6'2" , 340# day 1 starter in the middle of their D-line will change that & go a long way towards putting this team back to being a playoff contender . The Giants have been the NFL 's most injured team two years in a row . First time that has happened to one team according to Football Outsiders . Shelton , an Academic All -American , shows hustle on every play w/a non stop motor . He is a disruptive force who demands double teams & has quickness that belies his refrigerator size . He also comes w/cement heavy hands , sure to bruise o'linemen's bodies for years to come ! He's the type of player who makes everyone around him better , he comes without any notable injury history , & is a rock this team can build their front seven around for the next decade . Comparisons are being made to NFL mainstay Vince Wilfork ..
Leaving that write-up unedited because we love all TSTers, warts and all.
It's not a bad pick, overall. Shelton's a quality 1-technique who would immediately help them improve that line between DEs Jason Pierre-Paul and Cullen Jenkins. You do have to wonder, though, if they'd prefer to bolster that offensive line ahead of the D-line as was the case in the SBN NFL Blogger Mock as Big Blue View's Ed Valentine took Iowa OL Brandon Scherff:
There will be those pounding the table for the sexier pick of Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper in this scenario, or pass-rushing defensive end Dante Fowler. Both are tempting, but the Giants simply have to complete their offensive line if they are going to give Eli Manning a chance to get the team back to the playoffs. Scherff is the player in this draft who gives them the best chance to do that, whether he ultimately ends up at right tackle or inside at guard.
