An announcement will come next week, but the expectation is the #Rams promote QB coach Frank Cignetti to offensive coordinator, per source
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) February 5, 2015
He was in my lead slot in the in-house options since the beginning, so this doesn't surprise me much. Obviously, the talks of promoting Tight Ends Coach Rob Boras had some attractors, but in the end if the report holds (and it's Rapoport, so it likely holds) its Cignetti, Jr., at the helm of the offense next year.
Cignetti has been with the team since Fisher took over in 2012 as his QB coach. Prior to that, Cignetti held the offensive coordinator duties at five schools starting with Fresno St. from 2002 to 2005 with a one-year stint as QB coach with the Niners in 2007 in between.
Cignetti of course holds claim to Fisher's favorite resume bullet: having a father who was a long-time head coaching figure. Cignetti, Sr., coached West Virginia for four years back in the late '70s followed by a 20-year run at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Division II. Cignetti, Jr., would serve for nearly a decade on his dad's staff adjusting to the rigors of working the sideline before quick hits with the Chiefs and Saints landed him the Fresno State job.
Fast-forward a decade and a half, and Cignetti, Jr., is in line to finally get a shot at running an NFL offense.
