The expression "toxic differential" was coined by former NFL coach Brian Billick. Billick was head coach of the Baltimore Ravens for 9 seasons, and led them to a Super Bowl victory in the 2000 season.
From an article by Brian Billick for NFL.com in November, 2011:
"People are constantly looking for the right combination of stats to indicate the probable success of a team. What are the key factors to winning? Is it sacks, third-down conversions, first-down efficiency, the ability to run the ball and stop the run, total passing yards? All are important, but none are a precise indicator of success."
"Beginning in 1998, when I was the Vikings' offensive coordinator, I used a formula that I called the "toxic differential" as the best barometer for our team's success. Simply stated, the toxic differential is the correlation between turnovers and explosive plays."

2016 NFL Draft Order & Team Needs: NFL.com
Lance Zierlein updates the draft order (Rams select 18th) and each teams' needs. He's nailed it for the most part.
"Another year, another draft in which the Rams need to find a wide receiver they can build their passing game around because that guy doesn't appear to be on the roster -- still. Even if the Rams finally find a true WR1, do they have a quarterback they trust to build around? That's becoming extremely doubtful. The Rams could use more talent at center, and with both starting CBs set for free agency, the Rams might decide to make that position an early round priority."

CBS Sports Game Grades & Recap
Rams 23, Seahawks 17 | ||
![]() |
A | Thanks to a defense that forced three turnovers, the Rams pulled off their first season-sweep against the Seahawks since 2004. One of those turnovers came in the first quarter when Akeem Ayers returned a fumble 45-yards for a touchdown. The Rams' defense suffocated the Seahawks in this game. Besides the turnovers, the Rams also sacked Russell Wilson four times with three of those coming from William Hayes. |

D |
Russell Wilson better give Marshawn Lynch some of the recovery water because the Seahawks need Beast Mode back ASAP. The Seahawks' ability to run well is part of the reason their offense so effective, something that was pretty clear on Sunday. The Seahawks only ran for 60 yards in the game, marking just the ninth time in the Pete Carroll-era that the Seahawks have rushed for 60 or fewer yards in a game. The Seahawks are 2-7 in those games. |
