The St. Louis Rams have played eight out of 16 games in their schedule so far, so by watching the games it is easy to guess where the Rams strengths and weakness are. The biggest weakness for the St. Louis Rams is what has been damning the team for multiple seasons, offense. Now you can make a case for any phase of the offense being the worse part, besides running back Todd Gurley.
Instead of talking about every facet of the offense and replacing them through the draft, we can look at the most logical and talk about receiver. Why is it most likely that the Rams will draft a receiver early in the draft? Let's base it on the personnel. The Rams have five rookie offensive linemen on their roster, extended quarterback Nick Foles, and drafted a running back in the first round this year disqualifies.
No, the Rams have failed at one position and that is wide receiver.
We could talk at length about the Rams' receivers, but I say let's keep it short. The Rams best receiver is a gadget player, and while that is not a horrible thing, Tavon Austin is a complementary piece. If the Rams are going to get their offense out of the gutter, they will need a number one or at least a player that can give you an 1,000 yard season.
Tavon Austin seems to have found his place in the St. Louis Rams offense, and Kenny Britt is a very physical receiver on the edge, but the Rams need to continue building the offense through the draft. Michael Thomas is that mixture of speed and size on the outside that can propel this Todd Gurley-led offense over the top for years to come.
Thomas has embarrassed cornerbacks when given the chance this season, and while he doesn't have great numbers due to scheme and poor quarterback play, his traits scream No. 1 receiver.
Thomas is having a solid season so far with 39 receptions, 575 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns. The 6'3 receiver would give the Rams that big play abilty that they are sorely missing vertically, he has the size and deep speed that the Rams are sorely missing this season.
Here is a list of Miller's top 10 wide receivers:
- Laquon Treadwell, Ole Miss
- Josh Doctson, TCU
- Will Fuller, Notre Dame
- Corey Coleman, Baylor
- Michael Thomas, Ohio St.
- Tyler Boyd, Pittsburgh
- Leonte Carroo, Rutgers
- Braxton Miller, Ohio St.
- Kenny Lawler, California
- Cayleb Jones, Arizona
