2015 St. Louis Rams: Alec Ogletree, Christian Bryant & Jo-Lonn Dunbar Headline Roster Moves

It was a busy day in Ramsland, with multiple roster moves and transactions resulting from Alec Ogletree being placed on Injured Reserve/Designated For Return.

The Rams made a flurry of roster moves on Tuesday. Many of the roster decisions were triggered by the Rams placing LB Alec Ogletree on Injured Reserve/Designated For Return. Six players were involved in the roster tweaking:

  1. OLB Alec Ogletree was placed on Injured Reserve/Designated For Return
  2. Christian Bryant was re-signed to the 53-man roster.
  3. DT Doug Worthington was signed from the Practice Squad to the 53-man roster.
  4. LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar was released.
  5. DE/LB Gerald Rivers was signed to the Practice Squad.
  6. DE/LB Zack Hodges was signed to the Practice Squad.

The Rams had held off placing Ogletree on the IR/DFR in case they needed the designation for another player (well-knowing Ogletree's recovery time). Ogletree is out for the next eight weeks and will be eligible to play in Week 16 (Game 15) against the Seattle Seahawks.

Bryant has been bounced around by the Rams over the last few weeks. He was signed to the 53-man roster from the practice squad, released last week to make room for Trey Watts and now re-signed to the active roster. With the Rams consistently using three safeties on the field at the same time (and one less linebacker), it made sense to bring back Bryant and release Jo-Lonn Dunbar, if for no other reasons than depth and special teams.

Worthington had been on the Rams' practice squad all season. Dunbar was signed by the Rams on October 6, but was inactive for both the Green Bay and Cleveland games. The exemplary play of Mark Barron in his new role made Dunbar expendable. Could Chris Long's injury hold him out of action longer than first anticipated?

The promotions of Trey Watts and Doug Worthington had left two open spots on the 10-man practice squad. Rivers was on the Rams' roster for a time in 2013 (as the 9th defensive lineman), eventually being released in December, 2013. Undrafted in 2015, Hodges signed with the Colts as an UDFA. A two-time Ivy League Defensive Player Of The Year, Hodges is progressing in his conversion from college defensive end to outside linebacker/edge rusher (due to size limitations).

Jeff Fisher alluded to more roster movement on the way (during Tuesday's post-practice press conference), in anticipation of Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49'ers.
