St. Louis Rams 53-man roster prediction

NFL teams have to trim their rosters from 75 to 53 players by the end of the day Saturday, Aug. 30. Here's our best effort at predicting who makes the cut for the Rams.

Joe Skipper

SB Nation 2014 College Football Guide

Now, the really hard work begins for Jeff Fisher and his staff, and coaches all over the league really. Saturday afternoon is the deadline for teams to have their final 53-man rosters. That means cutting down from 75 players. So who's in and who's out for the St. Louis Rams? Here's our best guess.

Quarterback (2)

Shaun Hill
Austin Davis

That one's pretty easy.

Running back (4)

Zac Stacy
Benny Cunningham
Tre Mason
Trey Watts

Watts is probably more of a homer pick at this point. Reynolds probably has an edge because of special teams, or does he?

Tight end (4)

Jared Cook
Lance Kendricks
Corey Harkey
Justice Cunningham

Cunningham probably gets the edge on the last tight end spot because of his blocking.

Wide receiver (5)

Brian Quick
Kenny Britt
Tavon Austin
Chris Givens
Justin Veltung
Stedman Bailey*

Bailey doesn't count against the roster numbers until after his four-game suspension is over. The shocker is Austin Pettis getting cut, after being one of the top three to start the 2013 season.

Offensive line (10)

Jake Long
Rodger Saffold
Scott Wells
Greg Robinson
Joe Barksdale
Davin Joseph
Tim Barnes
Mike Person
Brandon Washington
Barrett Jones**

At what point do the Rams cut bait on Jones? He's injured again (back surgery), and won't play for who knows how long. The tackle depth is a huge problem, especially with Robinson looking not quite ready for prime time.

Defensive line (10)

Chris Long
Robert Quinn
Michael Brockers
Kendall Langford
Alex Carrinton
Aaron Donald
William Hayes
Eugene Sims
Ethan Westbrooks
Michael Sam

They might only keep nine guys here, like they did last year. For now, I'm thinking Sam and Westbrooks have played too well for them to try and stash on the practice squad.

Linebackers (6)

James Laurinaitis
Alec Ogletree
Jo-Lonn Dunbar
Ray Ray Armstrong
Darren Bates
Phillip Steward

This is another area where depth is a concern.

Defensive backs (9)

Janoris Jenkins
Trumaine Johnson
T.J. McDonald
Lamarcus Joyner
Rodney McLeod
E.J. Gaines
Mo Alexander
Cody Davis
Brandon McGee

This spot might be the wild card. They have to keep Tru Johnson on the roster while he's hurt (since it's not enough of an injury to use injured reserve with a designation to return). That means they'll only have eight who can play, despite keeping nine guys.

Specialists (3)

Johnny Hekker
Greg Zuerlein
Jake McQuade

Again, duh.
