2014 St. Louis Rams Roster: 53-Man Projection Update

With Sam Bradford out for the season, let's take a look at how the 53-man roster is looking with the first round of cuts coming up this week.

Ron Schwane-USA TODAY Sports

Welp. The train doesn't stop.

The Rams, now without Sam Bradford for all of 2014 and Trumaine Johnson for an extended spell, have to complete their first round of cuts tomorrow. We'll have the final roster in on Saturday at the latest.

That said, here's where we are post-Cleveland.

QB

We'll have to see how the Rams address this position in the days ahead (David Garrard being not an option...), but right now it's Hill at one and, seemingly, Austin Davis as the backup. Garrett Gilbert might make the roster, but remember the Rams did get active last year after Sam went down. I'd guess the trio stays intact through round one. We'll have to see if the Rams stick to a 2-QB roster on Saturday...

RB

This looks pretty set. Zac Stacy, Benny Cunningham and Tre Mason are in, and Chase Reynolds is too valuable to special teams. Trey Watts has flashed in the preseason, but I'd be surprised if he's not on the practice squad.

WR

This crew looked solid against the Browns. I was higher on the idea of stashing an extra here with Bailey gone, but at this point it looks set with the main five of Tavon Austin, Kenny Britt, Chris Givens, Brian Quick & Austin Pettis.

TE

The Alex Bayer-Justice Cunningham battle is real. Take your pick.

O-line

This one got much tougher for me, at least, against Cleveland. Brandon Washington looked the part against the Browns. Does that mean Sean Hooey or Travis Bond are left out? With Jake Long and Rodger Saffold at about a 0.01% chance to get through the season uninjured, who do you stash on the PS? This is tough. It's worth remembering that Barrett Jones is on track to return in a few weeks as well.

D-line

Oh Michael Sam. This was never gonna be easy was it...I'd guess the Rams keep both Ethan Westbrooks and Michael Sam on the 53, but that's me.

LB

This might be where the Rams find some room to beef up on other positions. I could see a five-spot of James Laurinaitis, Alec Ogletree, Jo-Lonn Dunbar, Ray Ray Armstrong and Daren Bates holding down the fort here...

CB

...because if you want the luxury of adding spots elsewhere, you have to deal with the need to stretch your cornerback chart out now that Tru's going to miss a third of the season. The line between E.J. Gaines, Marcus Roberson, Greg Reid and Darren Woodard isn't all that perceptible. I'd guess Gaines and Reid get the last two spots, but there are arguments for any of the four.

S

With all the other places to expand the roster, this is one you could tighten up to a four-man rotation. Especially if you're liking the special teams output from those other positions you're expanding.

News likely to come today, certain to come tomorrow. Stay tuned, folks.
