St. Louis Rams training camp report: Defense dominates day 2

Saturday was all about the defense at Rams Park. On the other side of the ball, Tre Mason got his first chance to silence his critics.

Injuries and surprise starters

Scott Wells sat for the second day in a row at camp. That put Barrett Jones in the spotlight as the team's starting center.

Jake Long was out today, at least for the 11-on-11 work. That's consistent with what Fisher said, that Long would be limited to individual drills while he recovers from the ACL tear he suffered in Week 16 last season.

Trumaine Johnson and Emory Blake left practice early with what look to be minor ailments. We'll have an update on their status soon.

Rookie safety Mo Alexander got some work with the starting defense.

This defense is good

No, there are no pads yet, but reports about the defense are just overwhelming. Some samples ...

Sharper day for receivers

Rookie report

Well, let's see, we've already read about what a beast Aaron Donald is, and he was working with the second team today ... the second team. Wait til he's starting.

Lamarcus Joyner had a pick today, which is good. He also had a little help making that happen from the depth on the defensive line.

E.J. Gaines had another interception today. Reports on his work in practice so far are impressive, and the Mizzou product could turn some heads once playing for real starts.

Garrett Gilbert's going to be a bit of project, assuming he makes the roster.

Position battles

Zac Stacy still has the edge in the running back competition, no surprise.

Don't rule out Mason. He's been slighted for his inexperience in the passing game, but he wasn't having trouble with that on Saturday.

And here's your obligatory video of offensive line drills.

We'll have more soon.
