Are the St. Louis Rams considering a quarterback with one of their first-round picks? They just might be if the latest report from NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah has any salt to it. Jeremiah dropped a bombshell rumor on Monday evening that the Sam Bradford-backing Rams could turn in a draft card with Johnny Manziel's name on it.
"Take what you will with this, but this is out there. (NFL personnel) are saying there's legitmate interest between the Rams and Johnny Manziel. There's at least buzz in personnel circles saying do not rule out Johnny Manziel to St. Louis.
"I don't know if that's a scenario where he drops all the way to 13 or if they will have the guts to take him with the second overall pick. I'm just telling you that's out there, and some people believe it's a real possibility."
Les Snead told SiriusXM radio on Monday morning that the Rams had been scouting a number of the quarterbacks in the draft, including the top guys. That fed into Jeremiah's report.
Confusing the issue is Snead's continued insistence that the team believes Bradford can be their guy.
Drafting Manziel or any other QB in the first round doesn't mean they have to play them in Week 1. It does make Sam Bradford a lame duck, but the Rams could still keep him in tow while the rookie learns the ropes ... under Brian Schottenheimer (yikes). Or, they could trade Bradford on draft day, even though his contract isn't likely to bring a hefty return.
And don't discount the possibility of a smokescreen here. There are signals lately that the Texans could opt for Jadeveon Clowney with the first pick. If they do, that could negatively impact the Rams' trade market.
Don't despair, Rams fans, wherever you fall in the great QB debate of 2014. If nothing else, this is just your daily reminder to believe NOTHING anyone says this time of year, whether it's a public endorsement of a player or a bold draft rumor.
