The NFL announced a four-game suspension for Jo-Lonn Dunbar on Wednesday afternoon. The Rams linebacker violated the league's performance enhancing substance policy, i.e. PEDs. As for what caused his failed test, Dunbar blames it on a mistake. He told the media at Rams Park on Wednesday that he "mistakenly took something that prompted a failed drug test."
He also offered an apology to his teammates, coaches the Rams organization and family.
Dunbar's suspension is the third one leveled against the Rams so far this season. Isaiah Pead will sit the first game of the year for a violation of the league's substances of abuse policy, stemming from a marijuana arrest in 2012. Rok Watkins was going to have a one-game suspension to start the year too, but the Rams cut him when he reported to camp overweight for the second year in a row.
The league does not disclose what substances players test positive for when they're suspended. In cases where that information comes out, it's usually put out there on purpose for any number of reasons.
Dunbar will lose a substantial amount of case for his four-game suspension. According to the numbers at Over the Cap, he'll forfeit $305,882 in salary and another $117,647 from a pro-rated $1 million bonus.
He could also lose out on some incentive pay. Dunbar had a relatively easy $700,000 bonus if he played in 70 percent of the team's snaps. He played in more than 98 percent last year. That will be harder to get considering he'll miss a quarter of the team's games this year. He can still get $250,000 in bonuses if he plays between 65-69 percent of the snaps, or $125,000 for 60-64 percent of the snaps. If he plays less than 60 percent, he gets no bonus.
