Random Ramsdom 03/07/2013: St. Louis Rams, Free Agency, and NFL Draft

Good Thursday morning, St. Louis Rams fans! I hope it finds you well. You smell that? It’s the scent of fresh cut gra…players. That’s right, the NFL free agency signing period hasn’t begun, but that doesn’t mean that the Rams can’t add a name or two to the list of available players.

Here’s all the news and notes you’ll need with only 49 days remaining until the 2013 NFL Draft...

Todd McShay Mocks the 2013 NFL Draft

He may not have the beautiful head of hair that Mel Kiper Jr. does, but his opinion is just as respected. If you haven’t seen it, he’s got a ’surprise’ pick at #1, and another that might surprise you at 16. What does Mike Sando think about McShay’s selections?

ESPN’s NFL Free Agency Tracker

The start to the 2013 free agency period is a mere five days away. ESPN ranks and scores them all. Jake Long tops the list. Mike Wallace and Greg Jennings score 84 and 83, respectively. Steven Jackson comes in at 81…and they apparently don’t think much of Andy Levitre (78) or Jared Cook. (77)

QB Contracts and the NFC West

The Seahawks and 49ers - the league’s two most hated teams - were made to look pretty smart in 2012, as rookie Russell Wilson and 2nd year, might-as-well-be-a-rookie Colin Kaepernick took their teams to the postseason in just their first try. Joe Flacco just got signed to a sizeable contract. Too bad for the two youngsters. It’ll be a while before they get paid like their playoff caliber QB’s.

Free Agent Tight End Rankings

The tight end position is one that has quickly risen to the top of the Rams 2013 ‘needs’ list. Whether it be for an additional receiving threat, or someone who can prove viable in protecting Sam Bradford, fans are looking to Free Agency and the upcoming draft for an answer. Tony Gonzalez is the cream of the crop. But how does the rest of the FA Tight End list shake out?

Dear Jeff Fisher, Vince Young Is Sorry

When you treat your football career like an alcoholic treats their liver, you revert back to step one: Acknowledge the problem. Whether it’s booze, or your immaturity, you try and make amends. Dear Jeff Fisher…"I’m a little bit more mature than I used to be." Nice...

Titans Not Ready to Give Up On Jared Cook

There’s no denying that Jared Cook’s potential leap into free agency has been linked to that of the man who drafted him in 2009. Jeff Fisher saw fit to take him then, so why not now? Well, the Titans didn’t franchise tag Cook, but that doesn’t mean they’re giving up on him just yet.

Adios, Wayne Hunter!

You wanted cap room for the Rams to make a few moves in free agency? Well, you just earned yourself about $4 million large. Wayne Hunter, who the Rams traded for Jason Smith, is now free to join his old - and now Smith’s old - team in New York.

St. Louis Rams.com: Free Agent Preview - Running Backs. It’s very possible that the Rams’ all-time leading rusher will not be wearing a helmet with horns in 2013. The official Rams website breaks down some potential names of free agents who will try to fill some very large shoes.

Football Outsiders: A Look at Arkansas RB Knile Davis. The list of injuries may be concerning, but there probably aren’t many running backs that could’ve boosted their stock at the combine more than Arkansas RB Knile Davis. Have a very in-depth look.

Pro Football Focus: Surprise! Scott Wells Didn’t Live Up To His 2012 Contract. Let’s be honest, you aren’t going to find a whole lot of articles that give St. Louis Rams offensive lineman a great deal of praise. Scott Wells was brought in to shore up the interior of the Rams offensive line in 2012, yet missed nine games. How does he rank in PFF’s list of centers who didn’t live up to their paycheck?

National Football Post: Danny Amendola a ‘Perfect Fit’ For Patriots. The Danny Amendola/Wes Welker comparisons are getting old. Just pick Danny up in free agency, and just make him wear Welker’s old jerseys. Just end it...

RotoWorld: Rookie Running Backs and Their Likely Landing Spots. Evan Silva recaps the top rated Running Backs heading into April’s draft and list a few likely landing spots for each. If Steven Jackson is indeed headed to a new team in 2013, the Rams have to be players in the draft, right?

Bleacher Report: What Would Steven Jackson Do For the Green Bay Packers? The answer is simple…or at least BR thinks it is. He makes them an early Super Bowl favorite. Wow. Quite the praise. The Packers are already one of the NFC’s best teams. Could Steven Jackson help them get his first ring?
