College Open Thread: Bowl Game Season Is A Go!

We begin wrapping up the 2013 college football season with a key intraCali matchup.

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sport

IT HAS ARRIVED.

Bowl season is upon us friends, and that means scouting. The final big stages for NFL hopefuls, bowls are sometimes the only chance some teams have to get a performance in against quality programs. For others, it's just the scrutiny that comes with post-season play.

Let's take a look at what's in store for today:

Name Pos Yr School 3k's proj. round

Gildan New Mexico Bowl; Albuquerque, NM

Washington St. vs. Colorado St. (ESPN, 2:00pm)

Xavier Cooper DL RS Soph. Washington St. UD
Gabe Marks WR Soph. Washington St. N/A

Cory James OLB RS Soph. Colorado St. 6-UD
Shaquil Barrett DE/OLB Sr. Colorado St. 7-UD
Crockett Gillmore TE Sr. Colorado St. UD
Jared Biard RT RS Sr. Colorado St. UD
Trent Matthews SS RS Soph. Colorado St. UD
Rashard Higgins WR Fr. Colorado St. N/A

Plenty to check out to get the day started, with one top prospect in Deone Bucannon. Lots of WR talent here too.

For those of you who don't watch much college football, it's an early look at Mike Leach's incarnation of Washington State football which is really starting to take off. They're now fourth in the country in passing yards per game and lost their season opener by just a touchdown...to national championship-bound Auburn. The only starting seniors on offense are the trio across their offensive line. WSU's going into 2014 strong.

Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl; Las Vegas, NV

Nelson Agholor WR Soph. USC N/A
Kevon Seymour CB Soph. USC N/A
Chad Wheeler OT RS Fr. USC N/A
Su'a Cravens SS Fr. USC N/A

The NFL scouts will be here in large number. There's talent for just about any position with plenty of youth to track. And bear in mind that in MTD's last mock draft, Derek Carr went #2 overall. If you're only taking one bowl game in today, this is your pick. Matchups all over the field in this one.

Name Pos Yr School 3k's proj. round

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl; Boise, ID

Buffalo vs. San Diego St. (ESPN, 5:30pm)

Khalil Mack OLB RS Sr. Buffalo 1
Alex Neutz WR RS Sr. Buffalo 5-7
Colby Way DE Sr. Buffalo UD
Bryce Quigley LT Sr. SDSU 6-UD
Nat Berhe SS RS Sr. SDSU UD
Colin Lockett WR Sr. SDSU UD

For the NFL, this is largely all about Khalil Mack. I'm sure I'm not alone in the disappointment that Buffalo didn't draw a stronger bowl opponent or at least a bigger matchup for Mack. We might see him in some weakside alignments to go against Quigley which is at least an NFL on NFL showdown.

Name Pos Yr School 3k's proj. round

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl; New Orleans, LA

Tulane vs. Louisiana-Lafayette (ESPN, 9:00pm)

Ryan Grant WR RS Sr. Tulane 2-4
Cairo Santos K Sr. Tulane 4-6
Chris Davenport DT RS Sr. Tulane UD
Lorenzo Doss CB Soph. Tulane N/A
Darion Monroe FS Soph. Tulane N/A
Royce LaFrance DE Soph. Tulane N/A
Nico Marley OLB Fr. Tulane N/A
Mykhael Quave LT RS Soph. ULL 6-UD
Terrance Broadway QB RS Jr. ULL 7-UD
Darryl Surgent WR Sr. ULL UD
Brandon McCray DT RS Sr. ULL UD
Marquis White DL Soph. ULL N/A

It's the Tulane Family Affair vs. ULL's Cajun Storm. Tulane is quarterbacked by Nick Montana, son of Joe who you might have heard of. Zo Doss' brother starred at Southern U. And Nico Marley? Not only is he a standout freshman linebacker. He's the grandson of Bob Marley. Family ties.

ULL on the other hand is led by Terrance Broadway, one of the most fun QBs you've never seen. And keep an eye on big sophomore Marquis White.

Good stuff going down today. Let's get it in.
