Rams Announce 53-Man Roster Includes A Few Surprises

Getty Images

The St. Louis Rams completed their final round of cuts on Friday, trimming down to 53 players. It is too soon to put the "final" label on the 53-man roster, as the look of that will change between now and Wednesday morning when the season starts. General manager Les Snead has all but guaranteed that in recent remarks.

After the jump, the Rams current 53-man roster and some thoughts on the next moves to be made.

Offense

QB (2): Sam Bradford, Austin Davis
RB (4): Steven Jackson, Isaiah Pead, Daryl Richardson, Brit Miller
WR (6): Danny Amendola, Steve Smith, Brandon Gibson, Brian Quick, Chris Givens, Greg Salas (Austin Pettis is suspended and does not count for those two games).
TE (4): Lance Kendricks, Matthew Mulligan, Michael Hoomanawanui, Mike McNeill
OL (8): Scott Wells, Harvey Dahl, Rodger Saffold, Barry Richardson, Quinn Ojinnaka, Robert Turner, Rokevious Watkins, Wayne Hunter

Defense

DE (4): Chris Long, Robert Quinn, William Hayes, Eugene Sims
DT (5): Kendall Langford, Michael Brockers, Jermelle Cudjo, Matt Conrath, Darell Scott
LB (6): James Laurinaitis, Jo-Lonn Dunbar, Mario Haggan, Rocky McIntosh, Josh Hull, Justin Cole
CB (6): Cortland Finnegan, Janoris Jenkins, Trumaine Johnson, Jerome Murphy, Bradley Fletcher, Quinton Pointer
S (5): Quintin Mikell, Craig Dahl, Darian Stewart, Rodney McLeod, Matt Daniels

Special Teams

K (1): Greg Zuerlein
P (1): Johnny Hekker
LS (1): Jake McQuaide

Some thoughts on the lineup:

  • Obviously, Snead is not done here. Three of those defensive tackles are injured, Brockers for a month. Scott was thought to be headed for injury settlement or maybe even IR. Snead said during the broadcast Thursday that they were going to be looking for DTs.
  • There are eight rookie UDFA on the roster. McNeil is a nice story, and took some nice reps with the starters. Conrath is hurt. Cole was a late arrival to the mix. McLeod and Daniels round out the safeties, but there was talk that the Rams might try to find more help at that spot.
  • I wonder if the Bradley Fletcher trade rumors will pan out? They could use the salary cap space toward a James Laurinaitis extension ... or to sign a player at a position of need, like ...
  • ... backup quarterback. Love what Austin Davis brings to the table, but you have to think they're thinking of a few backups with some experience. They tried to get one before Clemens.
More to come.
