Jerome Simpson got a three-game suspension for his pot conviction.

Free agent wide receiver Jerome Simpson, recently of the Bengals, has been suspended for three games by the NFL for his dalliance with the weed. The St. Louis Rams were one of two teams that showed some interest in Simpson as a free agent.

Simpson went to jail for 15 days after striking a plea deal to reduce charges stemming from his Fall 2011 arrest for having two pounds of marijuana delivered to him. He faced as much as a four-game suspension from the league.

Simpson probably will not be signing with a team until after the draft. If the Rams did take a chance on him, he would not be available for the first three games, though he could go through training camp. Second-year receiver Austin Pettis is already out for the first two games of the season because of a substance violation suspension incurred at the end of last season. Pettis could be on the chopping block anyway.

Simpson will probably get a shot from a team, maybe even the Rams, at some point because he proved to be a valuable deep threat when paired with a high-end No. 1 receiver like A.J. Green last season.
