NFL Draft: TST Community Round 2, Pick 6

The Jaguars are up again after picking David DeCastro in round one. Here is warriorsrise with the pick:

Jac_medium

Whitney Mercilus, DE/OLB, Illinois

Pick Grade:

A-

"The 6-foot-4, 265-pound Mercilus led the nation in sacks last season with 16.0 and was one of just two players in the country who averaged more than a sack per game. Some experts had him going as high as 12 so at 38 the Jags address a major need and get tremendous value with their pick."

Analysis after the jump.

This is an excellent pick for the Jags. Most of the concerns about Mercilus are about his one year wonder status. However, the Jags save the trouble of worrying about a first round one year wonder by selecting him in the second (after snagging DeCastro, who is a monster).

The Jaguars were one of the worst teams in the league when it came to sacking the QB last year. Mercilus' speed and pass rushing technique should help the Jaguars in those passing situations. There is no reason, give his final collegiate year, to assume he can't become a every-down guy. He's a great grab at 38.
