The Chicago Bears wasted no time in signing Raiders free agent quarterback Jason Campbell, according to Adam Schefter. Campbell signed a one-year deal with the Bears. The veteran quarterback was on the St. Louis Rams' radar as a possible backup.
The Rams have only one quarterback under contract, Sam Bradford. Finding a competent backup rather than scrambling to find a street free agent will be an important, if less heralded free agent move that the team has to make this year.
Campbell would have been a nice fit because he is a veteran who can step in without putting the team at too much risk, assuming he is not asked to actually carry the team.
Chicago learned that lesson the hard way last season when they saw their playoff hopes evaporate with Jay Cutler's injury.
The Rams can always get Kellen Clemens, a known commodity to offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, as a fallback option.
