Free agent rumors: St. Louis Rams closing in on a running back

The St. Louis Rams are closing in on a running back. Who that running back is remains to be seen. The available pool options declines by the hour, as the running back market heated up this afternoon.

Rams GM Billy Devaney talked to fans after practice today, telling @lannyosu, among others, that they were adding one soon. For now, the mystery running back(s) remains unknown; however, the market for running backs took some interesting twists and turns today.

Cedric Benson re-upped with the Bengals on a one year deal. Jason Snelling, once toward the top of their priority list is no longer there. The Giants do fancy the former Falcons backup and are chasing him rather than Ahmad Bradshaw, who continues to turn away suitors based on his demands. Bradshaw would be a dream come true for fans, but it's unlikely that the Rams would pay that high of price with Steven Jackson already on the roster and Bradshaw might not be inclined to share playing time...put Bradshaw in the pipedream file.

A couple options that have been discussed are still out there, including Ronnie Brown and Jerome Harrison. Keep an eye on Harrison; he's the one guy that hasn't been talked about much at all in connection with the Rams lately. Fits Devaney's stealthy m.o. in free agency so far.

Jerious Norwood could also be an option. I would imagine Norwood, given his role and medical history, wouldn't be the primary target in free agency for the Rams, who want a backup for Jackson.
