Hot on the heels of agreeing to terms with free agent guard Harvey Dahl, we have learned that the St. Louis Rams now want to upgrade their other line, the defensive line. According to Jim Thomas of the Post-Dispatch, the Rams have made an offer to free agent defensive tackle Brandon Mebane. However, St. Louis lacks good odds on actually landing Mebane.
Here's what Thomas said moments ago:
Rams have made contract offer to seattle dt brandon mebane, but not considered frontrunner.
By all accounts, Seattle and Denver are the lead horses in the race. There have even been a few stray reports that Mebane agreed to terms with Seattle, though nothing is confirmed. Maybe Mebane would put a higher premium on the chance to play for a legendary defensive mind...maybe.
Mebane is easily the best 4-3 defensive tackle on the market. He's a pure three-tech who can pressure the passer and stuff the run. He would be a perfect fit next to Fred Robbins and bookended by a fearsome array of pass rushers. Mebane probably isn't as high a priority for head coach Steve Spagnuolo who lacks a history of spending big on defensive tackles, preferring versatile ends who can slot inside situationally.
