Chargers Likely To Fire A.J. Smith, Could Switch Spots With Rams GM Billy Devaney

A report today says that the San Diego Chargers will fire Norv Turner at the end of the season. That same report also says that San Diego General Manager A.J. Smith is likely to get the boot as well at season's end, barring a miraculous turnaround from the team in the AFC West cellar. Those changes could have potential ramifications for the St. Louis Rams, another team likely to make changes following a disappointing season.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, who first reported that Rams owner Stan Kroenke was planning to dump Steve Spagnuolo and Billy Devaney, says that A.J. Smith will be a candidate for the Rams opening vacated by Devaney.

As for Devaney, he could be making his return to San Diego, where he spent the 1990s as the director of player personnel, a stint that included the drafting of Ryan Leaf. Acee notes that Devaney talk is just speculation, but he does cite sources who say that Smith could be a candidate for the Rams' job.
