As their uninspired play continues, the St. Louis Rams are in the thick of the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. Of course, it may be a dogfight with the Colts and Dolphins for the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, given how badly those teams are playing. Of course, the hapless Rams could use any number of players, and one recent 2012 NFL mock draft has St. Louis going defense with the third overall pick in this first-round 2012 NFL mock draft from NFLmocks.com.
And who are the Rams drafting in this 2012 NFL mock draft?
Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
Claiborne is just a junior, and hardly a lock to leave Baton Rouge for the 2012 NFL Draft. He could be a top ten pick in 2013 or 2012, and playing without Patrick Peterson on the other side of him has done nothing to disprove the kind of talent he has. Here's the comment on the pick from NFL Mocks:
The Rams are in a shambles. I think the WR's at the top of the 2012 Draft grow more overrated by the day. Sam Bradford will get his #1 WR, don't worry.
I don't think it's a stretch to see Claiborne picked above Nebraska corner Alfonzo Dennard, but I was more surprised to see him taken over Alabama CB Dre' Kirkpatrick, who goes at #8 in this mock.
It certainly is tough to deny the need for a cornerback. Bradley Fletcher has torn his ACL twice, and Ron Bartell will be truly lucky if he can play football again.
Of course, you can see a whole bunch of needs up and down this roster, needs that were supposed to have been taken care of, from offensive tackle to outside linebacker to wide receiver.
One interesting note unrelated to the Rams is that Baylor QB Robert Griffin III is picked second overall. That's a reflection of how legitimate the kid looks. I suspect that if a top three pick might still have some trade value in a draft heavy on talented quarterbacks.
