Maybe he didn't put enough adhesive on the receivers' gloves. Maybe he tuned the helmet radios to KSHE 95's endless loop of Rush and Van Halen. All we can do is speculate about why the St. Louis Rams fired long-time equipment manager Todd Hewitt today.
Hewitt replaced his father, Don, as the team's equipment manager in 1995, having been employed by the team since 1978 and working with his father more than a decade before that.
The Rams offered no additional comment other than to say that Hewitt was no longer with the team.
Strange. For as good as their drafts have been, the Rams' new leadership has made some PR missteps during the last two offseasons. Sure, some of it was way over blown, like moving around pictures of past teams and players, but the Hewitt firing is a real head scratcher.
There was some acrimony last year when the Rams fired long-time trainer Jim Anderson. Ultimately, that move made sense as the team wanted to go a different direction with its approach to training and conditioning. But the equipment manager? Strange.
