The St. Louis Rams take a big step toward the regular season today, cutting down the roster to just 53 players. NFL roster cuts are due today for all teams.
The Rams got a head start, already cutting six as of this morning. Those released so far: WR Jordan Kent, TE Darcy Johnson, S Brett Johnson, C Tim Mattran, LB Devin Bishop and CB Antoine Thompson.
No surprises on that list, and the team has to cut 16 more by the end of the day.
The waiver wire makes up the other half of this story as teams nab a player and make a tweak or two to their rosters. Backup running backs, wide receivers and offensive linemen would be of the most interest to the Rams.
We'll update this post throughout the day as cuts come and interesting names appear on the waiver wire.
Some news of note so far:
The Cowboys are willing to listen to offers on RBs Marion Barber and Tashard Choice.
Former Oklahoma WR Juaquin Iglesias was let go by the Bears...could a reunion with Sam Bradford be possible?
[update] I mentioned the Willie Parker cut in Washington already, but some other interesting names are popping up on the wire. Washington also released RB Ryan Torain, who does have a looong injury history/
The Falcons released OL Jose Valdez, who played some LT in the preseason in addition to inside lineman.
Former Rams first round pick CB Tye Hill was cut by the Titans today too.
The Rams have cut OG Roger Allen III...he could wind up on the practice squad. LB Cardia Jackson and DT Ernest Reid have been cut too...13 more players still need to be cut.
