Players will have the day off today after making their final cases for roster spots in last night's preseason finale. The St. Louis Rams coaches and front office people, however, will be hard at work reviewing notes and film as the winnow down the Rams final 53-man roster, due by the end of the day tomorrow.
And who will make the final cut? TST takes a stab at the Rams 2010 final roster.
QB - Bradford, Feeley, Thaddeus Lewis
I think that Lewis might get the nod based on how well he has play in each of his appearances this preseason. It's really a toss up though.
RB - Jackson, Kenneth Darby, Keith Toston, Mike Karney
I think Darby, for now, is the primary backup because nobody else has really shown more and he has the experience. Still, the Rams' backup is probably still on someone else's roster.
TE - Hoomanawanui, Bajema, Fendi Onobun
Illinois Mike is the starter; he's gotta be, right? Onobun has shown enough that he won't last on the practice squad and he plays special teams well.
WR - Robinson, Amendola, Gibson, Mardy Gilyard, Dominique Curry, Keenan Burton
I'd say Keenan Burton, who has had a nice camp, but has almost disappeared in games when he really needed to make an impact, will make the final cut. I also thin that the Rams will add another receiver after teams make their final cuts and either Burton or Curry will be gone.
OL - Saffold, Bell, Brown, Goldberg, Smith, Hank Fraley, John Greco, Renardo Foster, Roger Allen III
Last year, they took 10 OL for their first version of the 53-man roster. This year, need at wide receiver takes precedent over that tenth spot.
Defense
DL - Chris Long, Fred Robbins, Gary Gibson, James Hall, George Selvie, Clifton Ryan, Darrell Scott, Jermelle Cudjo, Victor Adeyanju
This is another position where the Rams could make a move after roster cuts. That's 9 players, last year the Rams started the season with 10. That could still happen, but I think injuries impacting the secondary right now and/or some solid talent at LB will necessitate one less defensive lineman. Eugene Sims could easily be added to this list.
LB - Larry Grant, James Laurinaitis, Na'il Diggs, David Vobora, Bobby Carpenter, Chris Chamberlain
Yeah, that's seven linebackers which seems like a lot. However, Chamberlain is a special teams stud. There was talk the other day that Vobora could be on the bubble, but he could start at any of the three LB spots. I have a hard time leaving Hull off this list as he's played very well through the preseason, albeit rather quietly. He leads the team in tackles through the preseason, but with a decent group of linebackers he probably ends up on the practice squad...and gone. Cardia Jackson is a guy to keep your eye on, but he'll probably end up on the practice squad.
DB - James Butler, Oshiomogho Atogwe, Ron Bartell, Bradley Fletcher, Craig Dahl, Kevin Payne, Jerome Murphy, Justin King, Kevin Dockery, Marquis Johnson
Keep an eye on friend of TST Kevin Payne who suffered a knee injury last night that he'll have examined today. That could impact roster decisions depending on the severity of it. This is a better group that the Rams have had at DB for some time. I like what we've seen from Johnson, though he is still looking like a rookie at times. It's been a quiet preseason for Atogwe; however, he has been better closing up the backfield even if the turnovers haven't been there.
Specialists - Josh Brown, Donnie Jones, Chris Massey
We'll know soon enough. Stay tuned.
