Do yourself a favor and go read the post over at Mocking the Draft examining the results from the Rams last three drafts. It's shocking what a difference there is between 2008 and year prior. The list of players drafted in '07 and '06 is a long list of busts and marginal contributors, a number of whom are no longer in the NFL. It's a good companion piece to the post from this morning reviewing the role the draft played in assembling the 1999 Super Bowl champion team.
It also gives you a sense of what Devaney and Spagnuolo have to overcome as they start piecing together a winner from the ashes. It's also yet another reminder of just how important this draft is for the future of the Rams. Pick a bust with that second overall pick and we'll be dealing with the results for a long, long time. That's why the Rams have to draft a guy that can be a career starter, a contributor. The guy they pick might not ever turn out to be the best player from the first round of the 2009 Draft, but the team's not in a position to risk it with a question mark. Fortunately, because they're not planning to take one of the QBs, the players the Rams are believed to be considering all fit that bill; the debate is what kind of impact they'll have right away and what need matters most.
Another draft note, I've updated the Mock Draft Database to include 3k's latest mock. And to make it easier to find the mock draft, the database, etc. I've added a box on the left-hand side of the page with links to those and other draft resources.
