Rams avoid history

The 2008 Rams came close, but ultimately did not finish the season as the worst team ever, according to Football Outsiders DVOA. For a while there, it looked they'd overtake the 2005 49ers for the title, but their fine play against the Falcons saved them from that dubious milestone.

Taking nothing away from the historic levels of suckiness the Rams reached this year, they finished the season with a team DVOA of -42.1%, seventh worst DVOA since the stat starting keeping record. The defense finished a little closer to the money, with a 23.3% DVOA, fifth worst all-time for those of you keeping score at home.

Fortunately, there's a clear path to improvement for the Rams, one they started on last week by firing Zygmunt and making Billy Devaney the GM. Hiring a new coach is next. RIght now, the only interview the team has lined up is Green Bay assistant coach/linebackers coach Winston Moss...and Haslett, who's been interviewing since week five. The next step is dumping the dead weight and brining in some committed talent, more on that in a minute.
