Football Outsiders Mock Draft

[editor's note, by VanRam]When Football Outsiders speaks, we listen...or something like that. Anyway, they posted their mock draft with a good analysis of each pick, and given it's draft talk time now, their mock draft is worthy of a discussion. Our friend "Marmie is the best" posted this diary to discuss it. As you can see, the idea of the Rams defensive line getting beefed up and becoming the stuff of nightmares rings like a dream come true for us long suffering defense first contingent of Rams fans...and all other Rams fans should enjoy the thought as well.

FO had the Rams picking Dorsey in the first and Manningham in the 2nd. While I would love to get Manningham in the second (and perhaps Sam Baker in the 3rd; he would definitely fit our 3rd round type guys) I am not sure about Dorsey. However, FO made a compelling argument that if you start thinking about it, you can just a see a dominating Rams defense; a dream that is hard to stop thinking about...

"I see Dorsey at the 3-technique on rushing downs, then moving over center on passing downs while Adam Carriker moves inside. That's a deadly interior rush that should make Matt Hasselbeck shudder and keep Mike Martz from instituting many 60-pass game plans."

If there is one thing that I love, it is seeing Hasselbeck shrudder.

Yea, sounds good. I'm for Dorsey!
Yesterday I was for Jake. Tomorrow I will be for Chris.

Seriously though, sounds like a good push up the middle. We need 4 dt, and currently have 3 1/2 with one nearing retirement and the other (the 1/2) possibly on the way out. That would leave Carriker, Dorsey, and Ryan. Ouch.

However, I have now gone stark raving mad with this draft stuff and suggest trading for the Cowpeoples 2 1st round picks. That would give us 3 picks in the first 33 instead of two. could pick up a brandon albert, a lb/s, AND a cb or wr.

Any know the cowboys phone number. Maybe I could start the ball rolling!

Looks like the Dolphins are talking to Gholston...
http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/04/10/fins-talking-to-gholston-too/

Seems as if they are going to see which player they can get the best deal on and go for it.
I hope they get it done soon, so we can get on the clock early.

Smart Miami
Pick the most signable of the top four, and sign him.

That is good for us too, if they can sign the guy before the draft.

If Dorsey
can stay healthy, he could be dominant, from everything we hear.

His injury concerns really worry me, though. I keep hearing from media people that are not so sure that his injury has fully healed.

Compare these 2
Player 1"Has rare size and good football intelligence. Is quick off the ball, reads and reacts quickly and neutralizes blockers. Has good foot quickness and agility to move down the line of scrimmage for an in-line tackle. Also has a short burst to the ball and quarterback. Good character, worker and good balance. Is big and strong and can two-gap and dominate. Has a quick get-off and is hard to block. Fights through traffic and is seldom on the ground. Has a good spin move and motor. Has not missed a game, is productive and athletic. Has good feet for a 300-pounder and has a good feel for the ball. Can hold his own against the double-team when he keeps his pads low. Loves the weight room.

Summary: Can be a legitimate two-gap lineman and is likely a top-five pick after coming back for a fifth year, unless teams become more concerned with his fluctuating weight."

Player 2:"A squatty defensive tackle prospect with a thick build and very good quickness. Anticipates the snap well, explodes out of his stance and generally will win one-on-one battles with his initial burst. He plays with a non-stop motor. Stays active, using swim and rip moves to get off of blocks when necessary. Displays good upper-body power and the ability to knock linemen back on their heels with initial pop. Does a fine job of locating the ball once he's in the backfield and flashes good change-of-direction skills for his position. A powerful tackler when he can line up a hit. Also does a better job of taking on blocks in the run game than he gets credit for. He can be washed out by some bigger OL, but generally does a good job of staying low and holding his ground when asked to."

Pretty much everyone can guess that one of these guys is Dorsey and the other is part of DT3. Player 2 is Dorsey and Player 1 is none other than Jimmy Kennedy.

Why is there a Mark McGwire highway and no Larry Marmie highway?

Rare size
Player 1: Fat and may be a nt in a 3/4.

Too bad I didn't write the scouting report

Top 5?
Maybe by top 5 pick he meant top 5 rounds? 5th round may have been a little early for JK, but it would not have been a bad pick there.
