Saturday fun: O.J. and another trade possibility

Restricted free agent deadline came and went...O.J. Atogwe will remain a Ram. Good news for the Rams, but there wasn't a huge threat to see him signed away by another team. Not only would a suitor have to surrender their first round pick, they'd be signing him to a hefty contract. Now the Rams, sometime before the next free agent deadline, will work to get a contract with one of the league's top free safeties.

Just to give you an idea of what kind of contract Atogwe will likely command, the Vikings signed free agent safety Madieu Williams, formerly of the Bengals, to a 6 year, $34 million contract in February.

A Jared Allen trade seems all but a foregone conclusion, with the Vikings being the most likely landing spot since  as they seem to be ready to work out a deal before the DE visits Tampa Bay next week. If/when that happens, the Chiefs are going to pick up a first round pick...at least one. The Vikes pick 17th overall this season and the Chiefs pick 5th. Reports continue to circulate that KC is interested in dealing up to take Jake Long or Matt Ryan. You have to consider the Rams a potential trading partner. So, how about this, our second overall pick for the 5th and 17th? It's a distinct possibility. And with the 5th pick, the Rams would still have a pretty good chance to land someone from the Dorsey, Chris Long, Jake Long, Gholston group of players. And with the 17th pick, picking up another key starter for Rams version 08 makes the deal pretty enticing.

Gotta tell you, as much as I like the guarantee of the #2 pick, having the 5th and 17th instead is too good to pass up.

Do it
On espn front page some guy says the Ravens have to get Ryan (insider, didn't click it on).

Lord knows they need a quarterback. Only SURE way to get him would be to trade up to the Rams. Atlanta still could take him.

O.J. and another trade possibility
While KC may well trade Jared Allen to the Vikes or Bucs, there is NO WAY they will try to move up to the Rams pick just because of this trade. If Allen goes, they will need the additional pick in the first round to draft an OT at 17 after they use the 5th pick to take a DL to replace Allen.  None of the OT's left at 5 will be worth that pick, but several DT and DE's who are worth it will still be there at 5. KC will replace Allen with the 5 and use 17 to get one of the other top 3 or 4 OT's in this years draft. Yes, KC needs several bodies on the offensive line from this years draft to actually end up playing well, but it's a mistake to think they're going to throw the baby out with the bath water just to get Jake Long at #2 if Miami doesn't actually take him at #1 overall.

How about
trading our #2 and Alex Barron to KC for the 5th, 17th, and 66th?
That would give KC a possible starting OT with Jake Long (assuming he doesn't go #1) at LT and Barron at RT.  The would be hard pressed to find a better way to upgrade their O-Line.
Meanwhile, the Rams get a shot at some top caliber players to build on for the future.

you've got to be dreaming!
KC is not gonna buy any of these lowball deals just for the 2 in order to get Jake Long IF he's still there. And if you think the Chiefs are interested in paying for the priviledge of giving the 2 pick extra millions as well as paying the Rams for the pick, you simply aint be paying attention. Their GM Carl Peterson has his picture on a wanted poster as the cheapest $oB in the game today! Plus, lets not forget that little tampering accusation from Herm Edwards following the Rams signing of kicker Josh Brown 12 seconds into the FA signing period. Chances are KC is not going to be favorably disposed to help the Rams right now.
