Random Ramsdom, 1/31: Rams Hiring Assistants, Looking For A GM

random ramsdom 1

The St. Louis Rams and the 29 other teams not playing in the Super Bowl this week are out of the spotlight. That doesn't mean they aren't staying busy. The Rams continue the process of interviewing candidates for the GM job, and new head coach Jeff Fisher is hiring assistant coaches to fill out his staff.

Let's get caught up on everything that matters on this fine Tuesday morning.

London Games Mean More "Jack" For The Rams

EARTH CITY, MO - JANUARY 17: (L TO R) St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke, new head coach Jeff Fisher and Executive Vice President of Football Operations & Chief Operating Officer Kevin Demoff take questions from the media during a press conference at the Russell Training Center on January 17, 2012 in Earth City, Missouri. The St. Louis Rams decision to surrender one home game in each of the next three seasons to play in London raised the hackles of a fan base on edge. Adding vacancies to the Ed Jones Dome surely doesn't hurt their negotiating position, but games in Wembley Stadium are more about the "jack" than the threats. Peter King notes in his Monday Morning Quarterback Column that three games in London could be particularly lucrative for the Rams.

According to King, the league compensates the team "above and beyond" their take for a regular season home game. King's sources told him that the payout could be $5 million, at a minimum, for the games lost. Add that up over three years, and King says it could help the Rams add free agents.

It also explains a little more about the decision from the Rams' standpoint. With ticket sales looking rocky after another losing season, they're likely to make significantly more money from playing a game in London versus playing a game in St. Louis. Again, that figures into the leverage discussion too, but it also has a more immediate financial benefit for a team that, as owner Stan Kroenke said, "hasn't taken a lot of jack out of the market."

Random Ramsdom, 1/17: Hue Jackson In The Spotlight

The St. Louis Rams will interview Hue Jackson for the offensive coordinator position. Would Jackson be a good fit?

It's a mostly straight line from the end of the season to where the St. Louis Rams are now, a nice, clean narrative from there to here. Spagnuolo is out, Fisher is in and he's starting to hire his coaching staff. Gregg Williams is on board as the defensive coordinator. The offensive coordinator is still up in the air, said to be between Brian Schottenheimer and Hue Jackson, a late entrant into the race. Jackson's the focus of Random Ramsdom today, since that's the big story right now.

We'll have live coverage of the 1 p.m. news conference at Rams Park to introduce Fisher today. Be sure to follow us on Twitter @TurfShowTimes for live updates from the event.

Now, five links about Hue Jackson, from his hiring to the fallout over his firing.

Random Ramsdom, 1/10: Waiting For Fisher

random ramsdom 1

Jeff Fisher is still picking his next coaching destination. The St. Louis Rams and Miami Dolphins are both proceeding with backup plan should they be the ones jilted.

9:10 Am EST - Update by VT: John Clayton just reported on Mike and Mike in the Morning that Jeff Fisher is likely to select the Rams even though Miami will be throwing the checkbook at him. This is mostly because of the situation in St. Louis (Bradford, draft, power etc). He also stated Miami is in serious backup plan mode right now, compared to the Rams. I would also like to report that Jeff Fisher is likely to eat and use the restroom multiple times today. Just sayin'.

A heaping helping of news for you...

Deadline looms on plan for Dome improvements - Three weeks. In the three weeks, Feb. 1, the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission has to present a plan to the Rams for improvements to the Dome, to get it in line with that vague "top tier" clause. The Rams can counter offer, due by May 1, and the two sides can then go to arbitration, which can go through the end of the year.

Rams interview first GM candidate - Just to underscore how much faster stuff moves on the internet new cycle than reality, the Rams interviewed Eagles Director of Player Personnel Ryan Grigson on Monday, the first GM candidate they have interviewed. They have eight GM candidates they are known to be interested in for the vacancy.

Why Jeff Fisher Should Choose The Rams (And Vice Versa) - Will at Rams Herd make the case for why the Rams are a better landing spot for Jeff Fisher.

Robert Quinn is being sued - St. Louis Rams rookie Robert Quinn is being sued by his former agent, Carl Carey, who claims that he's owed his fee of Quinn's first round contract. Carey says that Quinn fired him before signing a deal, after he boosted his draft stock to what it was.

Browns could trade down in 2012 NFL Draft - Wait, it's not supposed to happen this way. The Browns are supposed to trade up. Don't get your panties in a bunch, it's all talk at this point, but don't be surprised is Cleveland does not want to trade with the Rams for the right to draft RG3.

Alabama Leaves No Doubt: LSU Mauled In BCS Championship, 21-0 - Did you see it? The BCS Championship was a game for the ages, worth the wait. Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw won the MVP award, along with quarterback A.J. McCarron. Upshaw will probably be making his money in a 3-4, but he could be stud linebacker on the weakside in the 4-3 ... a long way from the days of the Rams trying to cheap out on the linebackers. He's a first round pick.

Random Ramsdom, 1/3: Stan Kroenke's Team

The St. Louis Rams made some big changes yesterday. What happens now?

Yesterday was a big one for the St. Louis Rams. The team took the first steps toward a new direction. While most of the chatter will now focus on who the team will bring in to fill the head coach and general manager jobs, it should be noted that this is now unquestionably Stan Kroenke's team. The owner is putting his stamp on the franchise after buying full control over it in 2010.

Let's get caught up on the news and what the chattering classes are saying about the news out at Rams Park.

Next Rams coach is likely to have experience - Rams owner Stan Kroenke indicated that he prefers to hire a head coach with some experience. Also, there's no formula for whether or not the Rams plan to hire a coach or GM first, despite reports otherwise.

Ax fell quickly on Spagnuolo and Devaney - Jim Thomas at the PD recaps the firings. More notably, Stan Kroenke speaks, pointing out the fact this is indeed a "results-oriented business."

Bernie Bytes: A look at the Rams' shakeup - Bernie Miklasz weighs-in on the firings of Spagnuolo and Devaney. Besides the obvious, that no team can allow a 10-38 record, Bernie points out the fact that Spagnuolo got distracted by so many non-football things, firing managers, trainers and worrying about control over parts of the building he didn't need to concern himself with.

Burwell: What's on Kroenke's mind? - Bryan Burwell isn't pleading for the Kroenke to retain Spagnuolo this morning, and I wonder if he'll ever speak of his argument that the Rams should have kept him? He does talk to Stan Kroenke, who explains his rationale.

Lovie Smith non-committal on Martz’s future - Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz could be on the hot seat right now. Head coach Lovie Smith refused to offer any kind of endorsement following the season's end.

Random Ramsdom, 12/28: More On A.J. Smith, Jon Gruden And The Rams' Future

Even more coaching talk for the St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams have one game left in their season, one game left to determine whether or not they finish with three wins or just two. For head coach Steve Spagnuolo, the difference between 11-37 or 10-38 is negligible. Either one is impossible to stand by in a league where teams go from worst to first every season. Coaching changes, front office shuffling and draft talk will take over, if it hasn't already, the conversation in the weeks ahead, so strap yourself in and get ready.

Today's must-read link comes from Bernie Miklasz at the Post-Dispatch, who offers a quick take on all the coaching rumors bouncing around yesterday. The key takeaway here is to remember that it's all talk, calculated rumors whose intent has less to do with the Rams' next coach and general manager and more to do with PR for the names being floated.

One thing I do wonder about in the A.J. Smith talk, would his ego really work well with an established coach like Jon Gruden or Jeff Fisher?

Now, the links:

The St. Louis Rams Play A Joke. Too Bad It's On Us - After the Colts and Vikings both win, it's clear that only one team has quit on their coach and city in the NFL. It's the Rams and they're a joke.

Burwell: Rams' top need is for someone to be in charge - Bryan Burwell at the PD set aside the excuse making on behalf of Spagnuolo et al long enough to make the argument for some leadership at Rams Park. It reads as though he's advocating for a team president, but really he's just making the point that someone needs to be in charge, accountability. Devaney and Spagnuolo share that now, and it's confusing. Also, he's wrong on the salary cap info.

2012 Pro Bowl rosters and the NFL Draft - The 2012 Pro Bowl rosters contain plenty of first round picks, as you would expect. What's surprising is how many players on the list entered the league as undrafted free agents.

Panthers’ Newton Prepared to Prove the Critics Wrong - Remember when people said Cam Newton wasn't worthy of the first pick in the draft? Remember when they said that his "entertainer" quips revealed he lacked the character to be an NFL quarterback? I wonder what those people are saying now.

Pro Bowl Snubs: Matthew Stafford, Aaron Hernandez Among Those Left Out - The NFL released the 2012 Pro Bowl rosters on Tuesday night and as usual there were plenty of snubs. Rams running back Steven Jackson wasn't the only one left off the list.

Draft Prospect: DT Brandon Thompson, Clemson 6'2 310 - Our own ValdezY continues his series on NFL prospects with a look at Clemson DT Brandon Thompson, who might be the best DT in the draft class this year, certainly among 4-3 tackles.

Random Ramsdom, 12/25: Getting All You Want

PITTSBURGH, PA - DECEMBER 24: Fans dressed as Santa Claus cheer during the Christmas Eve game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the St. Louis Rams on December 24, 2011 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)

Merry Christmas everyone. Or, if Christmas isn't your thing, have a great Sunday! One more week left in the season for the St. Louis Rams. We're going to have a special edition of Turf Show Radio next week, so stay tuned for the details. I suspect we'll talk plenty about what needs to change.

Let's talk schwag. Did you get some Rams related paraphernalia? We want to see it. Drop a picture of your new Rams gear, your girlfriend's new Rams gear, your kid's new Rams gear or even your pet's dope new schwag on our TST Facebook page. We'll feature the best of it on the front page here.

It's been a great year at TST. I'm looking forward to even bigger things next year.

Now, how about some links?

Rams' offense looks anemic against Steelers - Maybe Santa will bring the Rams some offense in the new year. They sure could use it. Yesterday's loss was the second shutout this year. The Rams didn't get shutout at all last season.

Rams Report Card: Jackson earns high marks in defeat - I know one thing, children that bring home a report card looking like this one would get a stocking full of broken glass and a used needles. It's that bad. Even the defensive line struggled against the Steelers...the defense line, which was looking like a real bright spot for the Rams this season.

Rams escape without major injuries - It's a Festivus miracle! The Rams skated out of Pittsburgh without suffering any major injuries. Of course, when you play as a anemic as the Rams did, it's tough to get injured.

Will James Laurinaitis Get Fined For His Helmet To Helmet Hit - The Steelers are usually the ones getting fined for helmet-to-helmet hits, but Rams MLB James Laurinaitis might get a fine of his own for a helmet-to-helment hit on Hines Ward in yesterday's game.

2012 NFL Draft

NFL Prospect: DT Mister Cobble, Kentucky 6'0 332 - ValdezY has been sharing a list of 2012 NFL Draft prospects over in the fanposts. His latest is a defensive tackle out of Kentucky named Mister Cobble, which might be the coolest name in the draft. Be sure to read this prospect profiles, and we'll be talking more about the players ValdezY is featuring in the weeks ahead.

Updated 2012 NFL Draft underclassmen tracker - Mocking the Draft has a page dedicated to updating the decisions and possible future choices of 2012 NFL Draft prospects. But fear not if you don't use that page. Instead, check after the jump to see who is in and who is out of next year's draft.

Random Ramsdom, 12/6: The End Is Near

The St. Louis Rams are in the news again. What now?

Nothing ever happens on a Tuesday in the NFL, at least not this late in the season, right? Maybe. Last year at this time Josh McDaniels got the axe in Denver. Last Tuesday, the Jacksonville Jaguars eighty-sixed their head coach, Jack Del Rio. Will the guillotine fall anywhere else in the NFL today? Probably not. St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo is safe for another week at least.

How about a hot, steamy plate of Tuesday morning links? Yes!

Even more injuries mount for Rams - Besides the quarterbacks and the likelihood that Jacob Bell will become the 14th player on injured reserve, the Rams have plenty of other injuries. Fred Robbins has a sore back. Adam Goldberg will undergo an MRI on his ribs, and Gary Gibson is getting checked out for the symptoms of an ulcer. The Rams are ulcer inducing.

Rams might go with Plan C at quarterback - If only the Rams still had quarterback Thaddeus Lewis. Of course, Lewis would have been unlikely to do much for this offense, but at least his mobility could have helped a left over offensive line.

Silver linings: Rams vs. 49ers - Sando had to really stretch to find any silver linings for the Rams in this week's game. When another week for Bradford to heal his ankle is one of the high points, you know the team is sunk.

NFL coaching rumors - Despite the win last night, Norv Turner is done in San Diego. His replacement, however, is contingent upon whether or not the Chargers fire general manager A.J. Smith, who has had some power struggles with his coaches in the past, including Bill Cowher's mentor Marty Schottenheimer.

One year ago today... - One year ago today the Denver Broncos fired head coach Josh McDaniels. Some of McDaniels' draft picks are doing well in Denver. Besides you-know-who, Eric Decker, G Zane Beadles, C J.C. Walton, and even Demaryius Thomas showed up last week. His 2009 draft class leaves a little to be desired though.
