Random Ramsdom
Random Ramsdom: Nov 5th, 2009
While enjoying the Rams one and only victory, take a look at these stories:
- Feeling down on Marc Bulger because of the bogus slide he had? Is that his Jim Everett moment? Jim Thomas weighs in. (This is the article VanRam has on his piece of sticking with Bulger)
- Speaking of Bulger, here is a tidbit from CBSSports:
Through eight games, Rams QB Marc Bulger is on pace for the lowest QB rating (68.2) and passing totals of his career. Last year, in an injury shortened seven-game season, Bulger threw for 1,826 yards and 14 TDs. He has 956 yards and 3 TDs this season.
- Jeff Gordon asks, "Are we really making progress?" It's tough to say when that 1-7 record is glaring at you, but I'd say yes.
- Nick Wagoner thinks the Rams are staying on course. The rock through it all? Spagnuolo.
- Kevinramsfan reported yesterday that the line against BYE was even. It's now at +2.5 Rams. No faith?
Enjoy your Thursday everyone.

Random Ramsdom, 11/4
This might be the best bye week ever. We get to enjoy the first of many Rams wins in the Spagnuolo era for two weeks. And last I checked, the Rams won't be losing this week, either. On a personal note, I'm glad they picked Sunday to win. The night before, my football spirits were in the dumps as I was on Rocky Top witnessing my school on the wrong end of a good ole' fashion beat down in the steady rain and cold. God those uniforms were hideous. On to the links...
- Broken by ram_rod yesterday, the Rams did some roster shuffling, cutting Tim Carter. Carter had to go and we're thin at corner. He's gotten some important targets in the red zone this year and did nothing with them.
- James Laurinaitis gets some love in the Jeremy Green's Rookie Watch.
- Steven Jackson will not tolerate your insolence! (Or in this case, the Lion's)
- An injury report from the AP regarding Danny Amendola and Jacob Bell. Let's hope these two get back soon. Amendola has been a find this year and I really admire the passion he plays with.
- Sean over at SBN's own Pride of Detroit has a drive-by-drive breakdown of the Rams' first win.
- Interesting, if not exhausting, debate about the QB situation at the PD. VanRam wrote about Bulger yesterday and I agree he's just not the solution anymore, although its hard to argue with the decision to bring him back.
- I'd much rather hear Steve Korte talk about Steven Jackson's will to win that overcomes everything. Including 17-game losing streaks. I've said it here before, we must build around him. His performance Sunday was borderline inspirational, and the Rams can be great (yes, I said great) if we make him the centerpiece of the team like we did against the Lions.
- The line is even for Rams against Bye this week. Should be a push, they're pretty evenly matched.
In all seriousness, enjoy your Wednesday. And as always, GO RAMS.

Reading between the offensive lines: Random Ramsdom, 11/3
Still basking in the glow of the St. Louis Rams first win? Yeah, me too. Let's dive into some random ramsdom.
RG Jacob Bell has a concussion and a neck stinger. Bell now has two concussions on the season, something that certainly won't help his effectiveness. Speaking of concussions, does it seem like the Rams have had an inordinate amout of concussions this season?
People can't seem to say enough good things about the Rams first round pick OT Jason Smith. He had a monster game at Detroit this week. I still don't understand why this guy isn't starting at LT. I think with his improved run blocking skills, switching him to LT and Barron to RT would give the Rams better run blocking on the outside lanes. And with Setterstrom, Brown and Incognito in the middle, you'd have the Rams best OL combo playing. Granted, not every game is going to be against the Lions. In pass blocking, you could put an extra blocker on Smith's side when the matchup wasn't favorable...or you could just let Marc Bulger get trashed, since it's not going to make him any worse (ouch. sorry).
The line is starting to gel. I can't help but wonder if Adam Goldberg has a future as a starter.
Bernie Miklasz gives his official endorsement to the Rams getting a new franchise QB. He does make a good point about Bulger, noting that the QB has done little with the extra time in the pocket he's had this season and pointing out that a rookie QB could fare no worse than Bulger. Amen on that. As I've said before, the Rams have a good OL, which should be better next year, and with Steven Jackson still set to thrive for a couple more seasons, it's a good situation for a rookie QB to step into, in the sense that he has some padding for early struggles. Imagine if Detroit had our offensive line and Steven Jackson, combined with Calvin Johnson; they'd have a lot more than one win this season.
Spagnuolo and the coaching staff will be taking a good, long look at the team and their own performances through the first half of the season.
Here's a drive-by-drive breakdown of the game, from Detroit blog Pride of Detroit.
Hey, what do you think about the new look at TST? I stayed up all night coding HTML...no, not really. Props to the gang at HQ for their hard work.

Random Ramsdom: Nov. 2nd, 2009 - Rams Win Edition!
- Sando has his wrap up for the game. In short, Hooray Steven Jackson!
- Don Banks believes the Rams deserved a win. He also has some ideas about the NFC West, and the league's play so far in general.
- Will at Ramsherd has 39 reasons why aren't the worst team in the league.
- Bryan Burwell has a game recap and some after game notes. When Steven Jackson, the man-beast, asks if you are afraid, how do you respond?
- Bill Coats has his grades for the game. Let's just say signal calling isn't a strength. Tom McMahon, I owe you an apology. Finding that flaw that resulted in the fake-Fells-TD? Genious.
- Jim Thomas has injury updates. Concusion's galore.
STATS OF THE DAY:
(1) 6.8 ypc- Steven Jackson
(2) 42.4% completion percentage- Matthew Stafford
Enjoy this glorious Monday everyone.

Random Ramsdom: Oct 29th, 2009
- Jeff at Ramsgab laying down the hammer...again.
- Mike Sando sifting through the nuclear fallout that is the 2009 Rams season. Alright maybe that is a bit overboard. Or is it?
- Bill Coats says David Vobora went through a "humbling experience". Let's just hope he isn't Bosworth in disguise...Also, Brandon Gibson may play this week. His immediate presence will be possibly felt a week and a half later.
- Andy Dapron can see a ray of sunshine in the midst of an 0-7 season.
- Clifton Ryan gets the quote of the day:
"We need a win for the city, for ourselves, for the franchise, for our head coach so he can get his first professional win. They say winning cures all, and we need a win desperately."
Amen brother.

Random Ramsdom, 10/28
Tough sledding for Rams fans these days. I'll do my best to find some bright spots.
- With a pretty good individual season so far (minus the scores) Steven Jackson keeps his composure. I have to hand it to this guy, he's trying very hard to be a team player. He must realize how good he could be behind a good run-blocking line, but isn't complaining or blaming anyone else. Jackson is a player we must build around before his time runs out. He has the potential to be an elite running back in this league and I hope Devaney and company make a commitment to do so. If they don't, in my opinion it will be a long time before the Rams get a running back similar to his caliber again.
- The Rams have signed a new long snapper to replace Chris Massey, now on IR. Ryan Neill will take over the job that Massey has had since we drafted him out of Marshall in 2002. If there is such a thing as an underrated long snapper, I think Massey is it. It's hard to find stats to back up a claim on any long snapper, but to my knowledge he hasn't missed a game in eight years and as far back as I can remember, I can't remember him costing us points because of a bad snap. Point blank, if you don't do you job you cost your team points, possibly a win. Just ask Trey Junkin.
- Gordo on how, despite the results, the Rams have maintained a professional attitude. This is something that keeps me believing in what Spags has going on at Rams park. The talent might not be there, but I'd at least rather have players that don't give up. At least we no longer have to put up with the Claude Terrell's and Damione Lewis's of the world.
- Nick from the Bleacher Report has, shall we say, an interesting take on how he would remodel the Rams if he were to buy the team. I'll let the comments sort this one out.
- With your Wednesday line update, at least one casino as the Lions at -4 for Sunday's matchup. Might be the least amount of points we've been underdogs by, if you're looking hard for some bright spots.
Keep the faith! GO RAMS

Snowball Effect: Random Ramsdom, 10/27
Just when you thought 0-7 for the St. Louis Rams was enough bad news, comes a morning like this. What is it about struggling teams like the Rams and the snowball effect? What cosmic force looks down on this team and decides to heap additional punishment onto the Rams, on top of their general suckiness?
Let's delve into the bad news.
Fletcher likely to miss part of 2010 too - Here's the worst news of all this morning. Fletcher was looking like a real find for the Rams. Once a head scratcher of a pick in this year's draft, he was the poster boy for the new regime's drafts, righting the wrongs of the past. Not only could Fletcher now miss part of 2010, what happens when does come back? Is he the same player? Does he catch Tye Hill syndrome and never fully regain his ability and confidence after an injury? Add CB to the list of team needs. If the Rams do get a new stadium, wherever it might be, let's hope they dump the turf.
Witherspoon flies with Eagles - From the rubbing it in department...Will Witherspoon took off with his new team this week, scoring a TD, forcing a fumble, and splitting the atom. Ever notice that former Rams get better when they leave? Why is that?
Null could see mop up duty - Next time the Rams are down by 30 points or so, there's a chance that rookie QB Keith Null could see some playing time. Why not? Start turning this operation over the youngsters. His future may not be more than a backup, but let's have a look.
Goldberg to fill-in for Incognito - Nothing against Goldberg, but why not Setterstrom or Greco? Setterstrom has started at G before, and did quite well. Greco will assume Goldberg's swing OL role.
Vobora is back- He's no lock to play this week after sitting out the last four, but it's good to get him back on the team. The former Mr. Irrelevant has played well for the Rams this season.
Lions without Stafford this week? - The Lions could be without first overall pick Matt Stafford when they play the Rams this week.

Random Ramsdom: Oct. 26th, 2009
Now, for that Monday feeling we all know and love. While your starting you're week with the Rams latest defeat fresh in your minds, take a look at some of the stories for today:
- As always, Bill Coats has his report card up for the Indy game. The highest grade was a B (going to running backs).
- Bill also has a story about Clifton Ryan being helped by veteran presences all around. There won't be too much more of that after this year...
- Sando has his wrap-up of the game. This jumped out at me:
The fact that newly acquired receiver Brandon Gibson wasn't a factor -- he was inactive, even though the team expected contributions right away.
How can you be expected to contribute when your inactive?
- Jake Locker was 23 for 44, with 1 TD and 2 INT (including 4 sacks)- in case you missed it. He's the #1 QB prospect?
Enjoy your Monday everyone.
