2009 TST Community Mock Draft
With the #20 pick in the TST Mock Draft, Detroit selects...
Here's LARamsFan29 with the #20 pick.
With the #20 pick in the TST Community Mock Draft, the Detroit Lions select Peria Jerry - DT - Mississippi
After bolstering their offensive line by selecting Eugene Monroe with the first overall pick, the Detroit Lions look to provide muscle on the Defensive Line with the second best DT in the draft. After ranking dead last in the NFL in rushing defense last season, as well as 27th against the pass and 16th in sacks, the Lions cannot afford to pass up this athletic anchor up front to free up space for DEs Dewayne White and Cliff Avril, as well as linebackers Ernie Sims and recently acquired Julian Peterson. Jerry has good play recognition and an excellent burst off the line of scrimmage which allows him to get penetration on run plays and sacks on passing plays. Although middle linebacker may be a more pressing need on the defensive end for the Lions right now, there is a good chance Ohio State middle linebacker James Laurinaitis will still be there with the first pick in the second round for the Lions taking. I also considered the third best quarterback in the draft, Josh Freeman from Kansas State, but given the amount of needs elsewhere, especially on defense, I can't see the Lions taking a chance on a talented yet unpolished prospect. Jerry fills a much needed gap if the Lions want to avoid getting gashed on the ground for a second year in a row and will hopefully add another piece to the rebuilding puzzle the Lions face as they look to establish a foundation at the line of scrimmage for years to come.
Hard to argue with the Lions' strategy we've seen in our draft, building from the inside out.
On the clock: Philadelphia at #21 represented by hambone38.

With the #19 pick in the TST mock draft, Tampa Bay selects...
Here's iwall2883 with the pick.
With the #18 pick in the TST Community Mock Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Brian Cushing - OLB - USC.
It would have been too good to be true to have Sanchez fall to the Bucs. Alot of people have them taking Freeman which I think is a big reach at this point for someone who is not going to start for 2 - 3 years. Peria Jerry got some serious consideration here but I don't think the Bucs new DC likes the smaller, quicker DT. Even if Crowell can comeback from injury LB is still an area of need and I think Cushing's value is too good to pass up as the heir apparent to "the Derrick Brooks". So 2 USC backers back to back and 3 in the last 4 picks.
It's USC Day here at TST! ...not that there's anything wrong with that. USC's program turns out NFL players for a reason; they're good. Good pick, fits their needs nicely.Man, that was one helluva group of LBs from USC this year.

With the #18 pick in the TST mock draft, Denver selects...
Here with Denver's #18 pick is 91GREENE.
With the #18 pick in the draft, the Denver Broncos select Clay Matthews - OLB - USC.

I was hoping either Tyson Jackson - DE - L.S.U., or Rey Maualuga - MLB - USC would have been available, because Denvers biggest need is their front seven. I seriously considered Robert Ayers-DE-tennessee here because he had a good combine workout and because he held is own against OT Micheal Oher at the senior bowl. I just think it is still a little high in the draft for the 5th best DE, so Denver will choose Clay Matthews-OLB-USC. He will be a tremendous help as Denver goes to a 3-4 defense, as he is quick and strong (ran 4.58, and benched 23/250lbs at the combine). Plus not many players have the NFL bloodline that he does.
Back-to-back-to-back USC players, hate the Trojans all you want, but it speaks well fo their program. Nobody would bat an eye about this pick now, but it wasn't all that long ago Matthews wasn't considered a first rounder. Funny how things change. This is a great pick.
On the clock: Tampa Bay at #19, represented by iwall2883.

With the #17 pick in the TST mock draft, the New York Jets select...
Here's JimHacking with the pick.
With the #17 pick in the TST Community Mock Draft, the New York Jets select Mark Sanchez - QB - USC.
With the 17th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the New York Jets select QB Mark Sanchez of USC. With the (re)retirement of #4, the Jets are ecstatic to have Sanchez drop in their lap. They believe he will be their QB of the future and will battle right away for the starting position. Although Rex Ryan is a defensive guy, he likes Sanchez’s moxy and tools. Ryan also realizes that the current QB contingent of Kellen Clemens, Erik Ainge and Brett Ratliff are probably not going to get it done for the Jets.
Say what you want about Kellen Clemens, but the Jets prefered the ghost of Brett Favre over the one-time Oregon standout. The Jets could also use a WR, but with both Maclin and Crabtree off the board, there's nobody worth spending the #17 pick on. Besides, this is a great value for the Jets' draft slot...in fact, the hype machine around Sanchez is really gearing up vaulting him to top 10 consideration now.
Draft adjustment: Denver is picking next, at #18, after the Cutler trade, and for the sake of time I'll ask 91GREENE to still represent that spot in the draft. If you can't or don't want to, let me know.
Same goes for the #28 pick, which now belongs to Buffalo after trading Jason Peters to Philly.
On the clock: Denver, represented by 91GREENE.

With the #16 pick in the TST mock draft, San Diego selects...
I didn't get the Chargers pick, so I'm taking executive action here and drafting...
With the #16 pick in the TST Community Mock Draft, the San Diego Chargers select Rey Maualuga - MLB - USC.
Talk about the rich getting richer...San Diego shores up the one weak spot in a great group of linebackers, giving them a big hitter and a guy who can drop into coverage. They could use a RB, but the first round guys just don't offer much for the price.
Here's how our draft looks so far. Now, we've got to bust ass to get this thing finished, so don't hesitate to get your pick to me when your turn rolls around.

With the #15 pick in the TST draft, Houston selects...
Here's Jombari with the pick.
With the #15 pick in the draft, the Houston Texans select Everette Brown - OLB/DE - Florida State.
Paired with DeMarco Williams, the Texans could have a nice LB group...and a defense that's shaping up to be quietly impressive.I could see Utah's Sean Smith here too, given their need at Safety.
Here's his scouting report from Mocking the Draft:
Strengths: Browns is a well-put-together athlete who has an incredible burst off the line of scrimmage. Shows the perfect tools required to be an elite pass rusher. When he charges off the line, Brown displays great change-of-direction ability and has good balance. His balance allows him to get low and dip around tackles, much like Dwight Freeney, although not as fast. Due to his lower body strength, Brown can hold up well against the run and stay at end in the right scheme.
On the clock: San Diego, represented by RAMS WE DA BEST. Don't forget to send in a short description with your picks.

With the #14 pick in the TST mock draft, New Orleans selects...
Here with the pick is rams13rocks.
With the #14 pick in the TST Community Mock Draft, the New Orleans Saints select Vontae Davis - CB - Illinois

In my opinion this is a bit of a reach, but the Saints are in desperate need of a cornerback. I would have Malcolm Jenkins here as there is absolutely no way they pass him up, but he was taken a couple picks ahead. Davis can be a very good cornerback if he can get past his character issues. However, the Saints are so desperate for defensive backs that I think they will risk dealing with his character issues.
The Saints obviously won't go offense with this pick, but I also see DT and LB as possibilities. They could really use an outside linebacker to form a strong linebacking core next to MLB Jonathan Vilma. I see Brian Cushing, Everette Brown, and Clay Matthews as possibilities if they believe Davis is too much of a reach.
However, Davis is clearly their best option, possessing a combination of size (6'0'') and speed with a lot of physicality. If possible, I think the Saints will try and trade this pick for more picks. The Saints' offense is set and with a DT, LB, and CB, they could easily be a playoff team. They obviously realize this and could trade for additional picks and later draft one of the OLB's mentioned before. There are a few defensive options for the Saints to draft. However, because of Davis' upside, I believe the Saints will draft him with the 14th pick in the draft.
Great boom or bust pick. Balls-y.
On the clock: Houston represented by Jombari.

With the #13 pick in the TST mock draft, Washington selects...
Here's salukihoops with the pick.
With the #13 pick in the TST Community Mock Draft, the Redskins select.... Tyson Jackson - DE - L.S.U.
The Redskins had a tough time getting to the quarterback in 2008 and tallied only 28 sacks as a result. The impact of Tyson Jackson could improve that defense right away as he slides into the left DE position. Jackson has pro-bowl size at 6-4 295lb and also offers a combination tough physical play and the versatility to be moved to tackle if necessary.
Jackson is a perfect example of why it's almost as good to pick in the middle of this years draft as it is top have one of the first five selections. Jackson could end up being just as good as an NFL player as Brian Orakpo but the 'Skins won't have to pay a ridiculous signing bonus to a player who's drafted #13 overall. Also, he's already had lots of succes against top notch competition so his probability of being a draft day bust is relatively low.
Other picks considered in this spot- Chris Wells, to give the 'Skins the best 1-2 punch at RB in the NFL or Brian Cushing who would fill another huge need for them at strongside linebacker.
This is kind of a surprise pick with Everett Brown and Michael Johnson still on the board. Converting Jackson to DT seems like a sure thing in the Redskins 4-3 defense, replacing Kedric Golston as the starter this season or next, when Golston's one-year deal expires.
On the clock: New Orleans represented by Rams13rocks.
