2009 TST Community Mock Draft

The #28, #29, #30 & #31 picks in the TST mock...

I'm consolidating. How corporate...

With the 28th pick, Buffalo selects Eben Britton - OT - Arizona

The choice of Britton is also a repercussion of moving Jason Peters. The Bills need a reliable tackle to be able to step in and potentially start for them this season. Britton can be that tackle. Though he may lack athleticism he has excellent footwork and should be able to start from the get go on the right side.

With the 29th pick, the New York Giants select Kenny Britt - WR - Rutgers.

Kenny Britt (WR) - When you lose you #1 wideout because he shot himself in the leg, then bomb out of the playoffs despite being a dominant force all year, you need to take action to prevent it happening again. I'm not sure Hixon is the answer, although Steve Smith Mk.II is a handy player. The new look G-Men will be Britt instead of Burress, Smith instead of Toomer and Boss instead of Shockey.

With the #30 pick in the draft, the Tennessee Titans select Darius Butler - CB - Connecticut

The Titans are pretty much the same team as last year with the big exception of Haynesworth. They signed Jovan Hoye in the off-season and have high hopes for Jason Jones so their DT position is low on their worry list. Their "kind-of-need" positions seem to be CB, WR, DE, OLB, and C.
CB: Nick Harper is 34 years old.
WR: I really like Justin Gage for some reason (if he stays healthy) and the Titans just signed Nate Washington.
DE: Kearse is 32 and Kyle V.B. is 30 and had a groin injury. The pick would be someone who could rotate in and contribute early.
OLB: Bulloch is 32 and Thorton is 30. This would also be a "rotation" pick.
C: Kevin Mawae has been in this league since I can remember. But, Leroy Harris seems to be the Center of the future.
So, the Titans pick Darius Butler. This offseason, they tried to sign Jarrett Bush to an offer sheet, which GB was able to match. So, they pick Butler to help out on special teams and also learn on the sidelines.

With the #31 pick in the draft, the Arizona Cardinals select Chris Wells - RB - Ohio State.

...with the "edge" getting up there in age and possibly being released, and Hightower mainly being a 3rd down back, the Cards can use this bruiser.

Last pick goes to PIT, represented by UNCFan1.

With the #27 pick in the TST mock draft, the Colts select...

Here's JohnMatuszakloveschunk with the pick.

With the 27th pick, the Indianapolis Colts take Evander "Ziggy" Hood - DT - Missouri.

The Colts probably would have preferred Perria Jerry with this pick, but they can't pass up on the opportunity to draft a DT with the skill set of Hood's. The Colts are desperate for run stuffing D-Tackles, and Hood fits the bill. His size, technique, and tenacity will all lend themselves to playing D-Line in Indy. He can start right away on that defense, and have an immediate impact. The Colts had to consider Percy Harvin with this pick, with such a serious run on Wideouts going on, but WR is a luxury, not a necessity with this pick, and the Colts make a smart choice in picking the big DT from Missouri.

On the clock: Buffalo (in a pick acquired from the Eagles for OT Jason Peters) with the #28 pick, represented by hambone28.

We're almost finished. Here's the rest of the draft order. At this point, go ahead and make your picks in the comments if you want, and I'll make a post out of them. That might be faster.

The Baltimore Ravens Select – Darrius Heyward-Bey - WR - Maryland

With the departure of D-Coordinator Rex Ryan and LB Bart Scott, new Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison may push for this pick to be on defense. However, dating back to the days of Boller and Billick, offense (especially a downfield passing attack) has been somewhat lacking. That’s what Heyward-Bey can bring to this offense. He’s 6’2", 210 lbs. which is average if not somewhat undersized, but he more than makes up for it with his blazing speed. He ran a 4.30 40 at the combine, and while there have been concerns about his discipline concerning route-running, I believe he can still make the whole offense better. The WR corps is thin as it is, and with Derrick Mason at 35 years old, he can step up and be the face of this group for a long time to come. Not to mention he’s from Silver Spring, MD and Baltimore is right up the road from College Park. I think this would be a great move for all involved.

On the clock: Indianapolis, represented by JohnMatuszakloveschunk.

With the #25 pick in the TST mock draft, Miami selects...

Here's Caruso with the pick

Hakeem Nicks--WR--North Carolina

The Dolphins can go many different ways with this pick, but in my opinion they go WR. Percy Harvin could also go here, but with a similar player in Ginn I believe they go with Nicks to put as their #1 WR and for a nice big target opposite the young, speedy Ginn, for Pennington to throw to and an immediate improvement on the offensive side of the ball.

It looks more and more like Nicks won't make it out of the first round. Too bad. The Rams could do well to draft this guy in the second.

On the clock: The Ravens represented by kevinramsfan.

With the #24 pick in the TST mock draft, Atlanta selects...

Here's PCarn with the pick. NOTE: To his credit, PCarn sent this to me early, well before the Falcons made the deal for Gonzo. Being that it's a mock draft, and we're trying to get this done before the real one starts, I'm leaving it as is for the sake of time.

With the #24 pick in the TST Community Mock Draft, the Atlanta Falcons select Brandon Pettigrew - TE - Oklahoma State.

Team Needs. OLB, TE, CB. I think there is three ways in which Atlanta could be using their first round pick. Linebacker would be their first priority I believe. If either Brian Cushing, or Rey Malauga dropped to them, then they could not turn down one of these guys. However they have much more pressing needs throughout the team that they could easily take their first pick on. A cornerback would be very ideal since they are depleted in the secondary. However Brandon Pettigrew is still available, and he would fit very well into the Falcons pounding scheme, as he is a big strong target with soft hands, and is a blocking specialist.

Today's trade makes this pick highly unlikely, but I really appreciate PCarn getting in it ahead of time. I would say UConn CB Darius Butler would be the choice here.

On the clock: Miami Dolphins, represented by Caruso.

Here's the rest of the order with reps:

I'm jumping ahead so we can get this thing wrapped up.

With the #23 pick in the TST Community Mock Draft, the New England Patriots select James Laurinaitis - ILB - Ohio State.

New England loves to draft players that are smart and fit right into their system. The Pats need an ILB to go with their stud rookie from last year, Jerod Mayo, and this gives them an elite group in the middle. They might prefer Cushing or Matthews from USC's LB trifecta, but Laurinaitis gives them a guy who can play in coverage and move to ball with speed and skill.

With the #22 pick in the TST mock draft, Minnesota selects...

Here's BigMac545 with the pick.

With the #22 pick in the TST Community Mock Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select Alphonso Smith - CB - Wake Forest.

Minnesota is interesting because their biggest need is at QB. Obviously there is no QB on the board here worth taking. Josh Freeman is going to be a bust and the Vikings won't touch him with a 10 foot pole. The experts say that the Vikings biggest needs are at WR and OT. There are plenty of WRs left on the board but all of them come with huge question marks. Heyward-Bey would be the best WR left but he is a lot like former Vikings 1st round pick Troy Willimson in that he is fast but there are major questions about his catching ability and his route running. Eben Britton is a good possibility here and will warrant significant consideration, however I think the Vikings would be best servred by taking a play making CB with this pick. We all know about the Vikings rush defense (best in the league both of the last two years) but with pass defense is pathetic (as shown by the Eagles in the playoffs this year). Furthermore, The Vikings only created 12 INTS last year (tied with the Rams). For all of these reasons, I'm picking Alphonso for the Vikings because he has the best ball skills of any of the CBs in this years draft. Smith tied Dre Bly's ACC record for career INTs and lead the nation in INTs as a Junior. A kind of playmaker like this could really bring the Vikings defense up a notch into the ranks of the elite in the NFL. Plus, if the Vikings can create more TOs, especially with their ball control offense, they can be really deadly come the playoffs.

I'll admit, I did a double take when I saw this pick, but BigMac545 lays out the reasoning pretty well. This is a great value too, as Smith might be the best CB in the draft...one relatively devoid of talent at that position.

On the clock: The New England Patriots and their video cameras, represented by BruinFanBaby.

Here's hambone38 with the pick.

With the 21st pick in the draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select Knowshon Moreno - RB - Georgia.

Since the Jason Peters trade has put to bed the need for an offensive tackle in Philly, a good complement (and part time stand-in) for the oft-injured Brian Westbrook is next on the docket. Moreno fits this bill completely, even though there are some who say the two are too similar. Chris Wells would also be an option here, but I believe Moreno’s versatility and playmaking ability fits in better with Andy Reid’s offense as opposed to Wells who is a more pure downhill runner. In addition to complementing the 30 year old Westbrook, Moreno has the potential to take over the reins and be the featured back himself down the road.

This is a great pick and great value at #21. He's also the first RB taken in our mock draft.
