Saints talk trade with Rams

Trade rumor sighting!

Adam Schefter from NFL.com reports that the Saints have talked to the Rams about trading up for the #2 pick. The Saints want to add a high impact guy to their d-line, and are, according to the report, quite smitten with LSU's Dorsey. You'll note, however, that Schefter describes the trade talk as being "informal."

The Rams have been talking an awful lot about Dorsey lately. While I have little doubt that they like the DT and are seriously considering taking him at #2, I can't help but wonder if upping the hype factor doesn't at least get them a stronger negotiating point for trade talks. Sounds kind of crazy, I know, but nobody bats an eye when theories about Parcells and Miami using negotiations with Jake Long as a draft ploy.

The same story notes the Ravens' interest in a QB. Trading up from their 8th pick to second would be a sure fire way to get Matt Ryan, no?

You can bet we'll be hearing a lot more trade talk over the next week.

I like the trade talk

but both 8 and 10 are too low for me.
our draft pool should be long, long, gholston, ellis, dorsey. they would all be gone by 8 or 10.

Bad

This would be a huge mistake IMHO, the high impact players in this draft end aroung position 5-7. Of those players the ones that fit our needs are only 4-5 of them. If we drop to 10 or 8 we will be sacrificing a top tier player for 2 players that are a serious drop down.

What would we even take at 10? A CB or maybe a WR?

IMHO a WR would be reaching and a CB would fill a spot that will not be a high impact for us considering our inability to put pressure on the QB no CB is going to be very successful.

I PRAY they do not trade the #2 pick but if they do then trading with anyone below 5 is a huge mistake.

Some "decent" player in the 2nd round when we have downgraded so much in the quality of our first round pick would be insignificant.

I respectfully disagree

If we trade our #2 to NO for #10, #40, and #78, I think we could get an amazing value for that deal. By securing extra picks in a deep draft we can afford to reach a little in the first round and choose DE Derrick Harvey out of Florida with the #10 pick. If we think he doesn't fit the bill all the way then we go for DE/OLB Quentin Groves at #33 and STILL have picks at #40, #65, and #78 to fill in high quality players at OT, WR, and CB. I don't know about anyone else but I would think that a combination of Harvey and Groves could do WAY more damage to an opposition then any one man.

We would get value

Rivers (LB) or CB. Now I can go with your Groves at 33 if we get rivers, But would still try to get Phillips/Mayo/Conners with the saints 2 and an avril/godfrey/patrick with our and saints 3rd.

Rams VP Billy Devaney

I heard an interview with Billy in which he talked about trading the down and many other things involving the draft.on Trading Pick?---We'll know by Wednesday or Thursday for sure of all possible scenarios we will go with. If we do get any calls about a trade, we will know how far we will go down and still be comfortable.

"We think that at the end of the day there will be some interest in that pick. We want to see how far back the teams are that are interested and if it will be worth it for us." They want to see if they are comfortable with the quality of guys that would be available. Billy said they can go a little lower than Kansas City's pick right now, and the Rams would be ok there.

I doubt

No offense but the difference between Derrick Harvey and Chris long and Vernon Gholsten is HUGE. Quntity is not always better then quality.

Our later round picks have stunk pretty bad for a while. With very few exceptions. In my opinion trading down increases the risk that we come out of this draft with very little to show for our terrible season.

I say keep the pick and take a top five talent, not trade and pick and risk losing the little value that a bad season brings us.

Not really

As far as getting to the QB, Harvey might be the better between himself and Chris Long. Chris Long is a better OVERALL player. Plus you failed to see my argument that Harvey+Groves is, by far, a lot more valuable than Long or Gholson by themselves.

The bottom line

The bottom is that we won't really be able to judge who is the better player until much later on. If you look at any draft, you will find guys who hyped as can't miss, who played great. We just have to hope that our scouts know what they are doing.
