Since this is the quiet time where nothing newsworthy happens in the NFL I thought I would throw out a few questions of general NFL interest to see what the rest of the TST fans think. I thought this would be a good starting place: Which rookie QB will be the first to get a start this season?
Blake Bortles – Is Bortles better than Chad Henne out of the gate? Jags management doesn’t think so. They would prefer to let Bortles sit for the whole year. Sounds good but wins and losses tend to change things quickly at the QB spot in the NFL. I think it very unlikely he starts any time soon unless Henne completely stinks up the place.
Johnny Manziel – If you are to believe the words coming out of Cleveland it will not be Johnny Football. They were generally happy with Hoyer and seem to be content to let him start the year. I think if he can hold his own they will stick with him for the year and allow Manziel to learn. Also what went unnoticed by most people is that they also drafted Conner Shaw. Now I am not suggesting that he is a better prospect than Manziel but certainly a more traditional option. Depending on the offensive scheme they go with, Shaw might make more sense as a back-up in a pinch. This is Cleveland we are talking about after all.
Teddy Bridgewater – Given the ‘talent’ at the QB spot and the consistent comments that Teddy is the most NFL ready, this might be a good guy to be the first to start. Ponder is certainly not going to be in his way but I think it is Cassel’s spot to lose. While not the best QB around he is smart enough and experienced enough to hold off Bridgewater for a while at least.
Derek Carr – Of their four QBs on the roster it’s anybody’s guess who they think the starter is today. I am confident it is not Trent Edwards. So is it Matt Schaub or Matt McGloin or can Carr beat out both these guys? I say yes he can. Will he is another story. The Black Hole is not going to be very forgiving if they don’t make a decision soon and make it right. They are not excited about the prospects of pinning their hopes on Schaub. Living in the bay area you can trust me on this. I don’t think the leadership is sold on McGloin or they would not have grabbed Carr. I think he has as good or better a chance than the top three drafted guys.
Tom Savage – My dark horse favorite. Houston has the talent to be a much better team than 2 wins. They need a QB for the future, not a year or two. That works against Ryan Fitzpatrick. After ten years in the league he is just a journeyman. With Case Keenum they have been there and done that. I think the Texan’s fans will welcome a new face at QB. Savage is a talented kid who played behind one of the worst O Lines in CFB last year. If he can show strong in the pre-season don’t be surprised if he starts day one based on situation alone.
So there you have it. What do you think?
