The St. Louis Rams held a visit with local Missouri defensive end Kony Ealy on Friday. Since Ealy is a local prospect, he doesn't count against the Rams 30 player prospect visits allowed by the NFL. It's not a shock the Rams are bringing in Ealy. He's a hell of a player, so why not bring him in for a visit?
Is Kony Ealy a 1st-round pick?
2014 NFL Draft
Here's Matthew Fairburn on the star Missouri defensive end.
After Jadeveon Clowney, the 2014 NFL Draft defensive end class is a bit muddled. Not many players stand out as pure 4-3 defensive ends. Ealy will benefit from that on draft day. He has all of the physical tools to play at a high level in the NFL but needs to refine some of the mental parts of his game. The fire and emotion he flashes on the field need to be more consistent and also reigned in. He needs to prove he can bring it on every play. Ealy is not without flaws as a prospect, but all of his flaws are easily fixable. His physical talent is something that can't be taught.
Ealy is almost universally known as the 2nd rated defensive end behind Jadeveon Clowney. Honestly, there's a chance that the Rams could select Ealy in a trade down. You can never have enough pass rushers, and although Ealy isn't as good Clowney, he's still a good player. Ealy could play the role people think Clowney would play if the Rams drafted him. There would be a lot of defensive fronts with Ealy, Chris Long, and Robert Quinn on the line at the same time, and in two years he would probably replace one of the two pass rushers on the team.
The draft is almost here, and it could go in many different directions for the Rams. Maybe improving the Rams defensive line is the direction St. Louis should take?
