Just how good (or bad) is a BPA draft strategy?

As the NFL boards rage on towards the 4th week in April 2nd week of May everyone has their favorite ideas on the draft. One of the biggest arguments comes in the strategy discussion of Best Player Available or Need.

Is it "Great teams are built by drafting the BPA" or "Great teams find a way to fill positions of need with good players"? For those who have paid attention to my posts you know I like to test theories. Unfortunately I can’t really test the theory of Need because there aren’t objective third party sources out there that can say with certainty what any teams need is, in an absolute order etc. However, lots of sources do rank players available in the draft irrespective of who is drafting where.

So I thought it might be interesting to look at who we would get with our picks, no trade, drafting BPA by the various sources available on the web. I used the draft order from somewhere, hope its right. Some gave a sufficient number of players to complete the draft while others gave you only their top 40 or 50 or 100, so some are partial drafts but interesting nonetheless. So without any further ado, I give you these BPA drafts (with a bit of commentary following each):

Decent first two picks but pretty sure we don’t need 2 QBs or a punter or a RB in the third. But when you are drafting BPA, this is what you get. Forgot to mention the rest of our OL I assume will be filled with 7th round compensatory picks!

Like CBS above good first two picks plus the third pick is ok. Many TST folks like Murray in the later rounds but again two QBs and a RB.

Those were the only ones with a full BPA list but here are some of the quick hitters. Brace yourself.

Good start on these two but no way to know what they might do to you in the later rounds. Also, what do we do for an OL?

OK pics…but the one I have the least confidence in. Robinson still available at 13 and Mosely at 44. Scary.

So there you have it. If it's BPA this is what you get.
