Free agency started today and I have been disappointed with the lack of moves the Rams have not been making. The players they did target have signed with other teams. In the past the Rams have tried to build their offensive line through free agency and have failed. With the way things are going, its time to move in another direction.
Here are my ideas.
1. Accept the fact the we need to build our O-Line through the draft. Trade back with our first pick but stay within the first 6 picks. This will ensure us Robinson or Mathews.
2. With the second pick in the first round, select Z. Martin. This will gives us two versatile lineman and upgrade our unit with young and very talented players. I know this is not the sexy pick but it fills a huge need and the value should be there at 13.
3. I still think we can fill needs through free agency. I would go after D. Ware. He could be had for a value that's low for his standards. Just imagine that D line. Quinn, Brockers, Langford and Long starting. You would have Ware and Hayes coming off the bench, This would make for the best D line in football. This will also help with the secondary because a good D Line that puts pressure on the QB allows our secondary to make plays they normally wouldn't. I would go nuts if this happened.
4. I would then go after H.Nicks. He could be had for cap friendly price. He would fill a hole at WR and could mentor the young WR's. He does have injury issues but its time to take on the risk and see what happens. He will not command a long term contract so it won't hurt to much if it doesn't work out.
Here is the recap. The O Line would be much younger and much more talented. They O Line would also be versatile incase of injury's. The D Line would just be awesome. You could rotate 6 players and have them fresh from beginning to end. You have Brockers and Langford clogging up the middle when needed and then have a monster pass rush when needed. We add a once #1 type of receiver at a low cost for a short term. There is a chance he might fail but we would not have to sign him to a long term contract. I have been a Rams fan a long time and if such events as these were to happen, the 2014 season could not come fast enough.
