On The Bubble: Cortland Finnegan

I wanted to do a series of articles taking an in depth look at those players facing cap cuts or just plain cut. I know many of us feel that Cort had a bad year. I wanted to take a closer look at his grades at PFF premium stats and not just for this past year but as far back as I could.

I was hoping it would tell me something about his performance curve. Was it just a bad year or can we see a trend that shows a decline in his abilities?

Let’s take a look:

First how to read the grades: Source PFF

"• ZERO (0.0) IS THE AVERAGE GRADE — If a player does something you would normally expect, then this scores a 0. If a linebacker makes an unblocked tackle 5 yards downfield or a tight end makes a wide-open catch for an 8-yard gain, they receive a score of 0 for that play.

Grades are given for plays which are reasonably considered to be better or worse than the average or expected play. So for example, if the linebacker were to then force a fumble on that tackle, that would constitute a positive play and a positive grade. If the tight end were to in fact drop the wide-open pass that would constitute a negative play and a negative grade.

Alright you’ve had time to study Cort’s history and I want to show you some things that I noticed.

First off is Cort started out at Right Corner Back (RCB), has played some left (LCB), and even strong (SCB). I started to get this feeling that he was better at one position than the other, and wanted to prove it.

In reality I think the 2013 Cort was injured all season. The games he did play shows me he had given his best and maybe covered up his problems. To me that shows heart on his part and wanting to help the team win.

So here is Cort’s positional totals:

It should be pretty obvious that Cort is better playing RCB than any other spot on the field. So where have the Rams mainly used him you ask? You guessed it…at LCB!

Is that by design or necessity? I really don’t know but his production could go up simply by playing him more at RCB. Obviously the next step is to take a look at Janoris Jenkins and then Trumaine Johnson.

At first glance it looks about even… but you must consider how much he improved at LCB from his rookie year. A ( +1) grade is above average. Jenks also improved at RCB but not by as much. Two things come to mind when I look at what we’ve discovered so far.

1. Janoris did not flat line like some say. He improved regardless of Walton’s influence.

2. Why is Cort playing LCB when he is better at RCB, and vice a versa for Jenks?

And right now, I just can’t help but wonder how Trumaine Johnson compares.

So now I’m really wondering what is going on with the Rams… because I see players playing on the wrong side of the field. Is this Walton’s doing or just something the coaches haven’t noticed? I don’t know there could be any number of reasons.

I’m giving Jenkins the one rating he earned this past year and not taking off for his low rookie score. If you included that he would be about equal on either side of the field.

Sorry I digressed a bit but I found it interesting to do some comparisons. All right let’s get back to the main topic of Finnegan on the bubble.

Here are his career scores again:

In spite of being played on his week side and injured, Cort improved three points from 2012-2013. Should he be cut, or just given a pay cut? Maybe he should be played as a RCB.. where he had his career high score. Just a guess but it sounds like a pretty good idea to play a guy where he is best.

You could make an argument that playing Trumaine at LCB and Jenkins at RCB would be good enough if we draft another CB, or in my opinion an awesome safety first. That would mean Cort gets cut and we save a boatload of cap money.

I’ll let the polls decide.

I hope you enjoyed this!
