Snead/Fisher Draft: A Deep Dive Look

St_louis_rams2_medium

This article is my attempt to further define what we might expect "The Hair & The Fish" to be interested in on draft day.

First I’m going to take a look at how the Falcon’s drafted when Les "The Hair" was involved from 2007-2011.

This first chart is sorted by "Round."

Of course The Fish has had a lot more years of drafting but it shouldn’t affect the percentages when we do a comparison at the end of all this: Jeff Fisher’s Number of players drafted and percentage career drafting.

I think it’s interesting that after charting only 5 years of Les Snead vs. 15 for Jeff Fisher that the percentages of each position drafted are so close. Does this mean its league wide and that’s about what you need each year at each position? I’m not but I may chart some other teams to compare percentages.

Summary: What I see in these tea-leaves

Center: The Rams have ignored this position and I can’t see any reason we would try to draft a center.

DB: The Defensive Backs spot has been consistently drafted at around 25% all across the board. This position needs at least 2 maybe 3 spots filled if Finnegan is let go.

DE/DT: Fish and Snead have spent about 17% of their picks in this area annually. Combined they’ve only invested 6.25% with the Rams. To me this shows they are pretty happy and may forget about Clowney unless he is the BPA. Or it could mean this area is ripe to have more invested. Your guess is as good as mine.

G: Together Fish & Snead invested more in the Guard position than they ever have on their own. It doesn’t appear to be fixed in stone due to FA questions and some aging injury prone players. This area will be looked at in the draft.

LB: Linebackers was comparable and I don’t read this as a first concern for this year’s draft.

QB: This is where they pick up draft capital by sticking with Bradford. I don’t see this being a big issue until the late rounds, and only for a serviceable back up.

RB: Fish & Snead have invested heavily here and unfortunately someone named Pead is a bust. I don’t see any great need for a RB this time with Stacy/Cunningham/Richardson around.

T: Tackle has been ignored for too long and needs to be addressed. Whether it’s moving bodies around or finding good draft stock in later rounds.

TE: Tight End was ignored due to Jared Cook being signed. Did it work out and they can skip it again or is he the first cap casualty.

WR: Rams have invested heavily in the last two years. I believe Snead is going to lower the priority of picking a new WR, unless there just isn’t anything else to get.

I know there are a lot of smart people out on this blog, and I'm sure you might have other idea's about this data. Please tell us what you read in these tea leaves. I'd love to hear it because a second set of eyes is always a good thing!

Thanks for Reading!
