Free Agent Scores/Salary

As we TST-ers try to guess whether or not Jeff Fisher will select an offensive lineman in the draft. It’s probably wise to see what is available in free agency. I’m using PFF premium stats for an indicator of performance by these free agents last season.

Methodology:

I selected the top 25 ranked players at each position, and compared them to the unrestricted free agent lists. If they made the top 25 I pulled their stats from last year and also their salary. Of course they will be trying to get a big pay day! We can now guestimate what they might accept based on last year’s money.

How to read the PFF scores: ZERO (0.0) IS THE AVERAGE GRADE — If a player does something you would normally expect, then this scores a 0. If a linebacker makes an unblocked tackle 5 yards downfield or a tight end makes a wide-open catch for an 8-yard gain, they receive a score of 0 for that play.

Grades are given for plays which are reasonably considered to be better or worse than the average or expected play. So for example, if the linebacker were to then force a fumble on that tackle, that would constitute a positive play and a positive grade. If the tight end were to in fact drop the wide-open pass, that would constitute a negative play and a negative grade. (From PFF premium stats site.)

TACKLES:

I’ve included Jake Long in this chart even though he is not a free agent. The salary differential is worth looking at vs. performance and the pay of other top tackles.

If it wasn’t for all the dead money on Jake Long, you could make a pretty strong statement for him being overpaid. I believe the Rams took him last year because they felt like they had other priorities to draft besides a LT.

At RT Zack Strief looks like a bargain because he only made $2.5M last year. Perhaps he could be signed at double that and a proven RT might be better than drafting a rookie.

Maybe Jake makes so much because he’s really good at Pass Protection? Let’s see how he’s been ranked and you decide.

Only 3 Free Agent guards made it into the top 25 ranks. One is our very own Rodger Saffold. Keep in mind he’s only played RG for 6 games. It looks to me that either one of these guys is a bargain. The FO just might consider one of them to free up draft capital.

As you can see Scott Wells is making big money for being injured a lot and turning in a 23 out of 25 production. It looks like some of these other free agents might be worth looking at as far as money and performance go.

Brent Grimes had a much better year than Cortland Finnegan and at a lot less money. I would say that the FO might be seriously considering a FA if they don’t retain Cort.

These are the best performing Safeties and the kind of money they made last year. There could be a couple on this list that might be worth looking at.

Our safeties came in last year in this order out of 86 potential spots:

Darian Stewart (41)

Rodney McLeod (75)

T.J. McDonald (76)
