A different look at Chris Long. Keeper? Cut him loose?

My fellow TSTer's, We've had quite a few articles written lately about Chris Long. Should we re-structure his contract? Is he worth his contract? Is he worth it as trade bait? Release him? I wanted to look at this issue from a different point of view. Let's look at 1st round DE's picked in the years around Chris and see what they've done compared to Chris.

My stats are from Pro Football Reference. The contracts are from Spotrac.

Here is a graph to compare some stats and contracts for at least this point of view. I used these years because they are close to his year picked and all are picks before the new CBA.

The status column means what contract they're on or status for the 2014 season.

As you can see from the graph, his stats are the best of the 1st round DE draft picks. You'll also see how many players are no longer in the league, which surprised me.

I'll give you a little more information that most of us know but maybe tend to forget. At the end of 2012, Chris Long led all NFL DE's in QB hurries for the 3rd year in a row. At the end of 2013, Chris Long was voted as the 1st alternate for the Pro Bowl for the 4th year in a row.

I don't think Chris Long is out of gas and I certainly don't think he's trade bait. His contract is large but let's wait until these UFA's on the chart get their new contracts and we'll see how those dollars stack up with their stats.

Thanks for reading, GO RAMS!!!
