The theme since the breaking news yesterday is all about Defense. I gave you the details about Tim Walton, and to continue along those lines we are going to take a look at our new Defensive Coordinator…Gregg Williams.

While digging into the defensive history of the Rams I ran across an interesting bit of trivia for you.

Question: From 1990-2013 what was the highest NFL Defensive ranking the Rams obtained, and who was the Defensive Coordinator?

Answer: In 1991 the Rams had the second best defense in the league, and the defensive coordinator was none other than Jeff Fisher.

Here is the complete listing: Stats are from "Sporting Charts."

The really interesting thing about these rankings, are that the only time the Rams have cracked the top 10 (1990-2013) was when Jeff Fisher was the DC. Now take a look at 2012 when we had no named DC. We turned in number 15! I would say that’s due in large part to Jeff Fisher running the defense.

But the premise for this article is to take a closer look at Williams coaching history and defensive ranking for that year’s team. I’ve charted what I found, and it comes out like this:

First off… Williams has been involved in one capacity or another with 6 Top-Ten defensive teams. It’s interesting to note that the 1990-1992 Oilers climbed from 28th to 4th. After doing a stint with special teams and linebackers he became the coordinator in 1997 for the Oilers…which improved three spots the following year.

He didn’t have a lot of success from 1999-2000 with the Titans posting a 24th and 27th ranking. In 2001 Williams took over as head coach for the Buffalo Bill’s and the defenses were very good. 9th, 11th, and 6th. This was his best run of defenses in his career so far. His defensive coordinator was Jerry Gray, who is now the DC for the Titans.

Williams took the Washington Redskins from 28th to 7th in three years (2005-2007). Moving on to Jax to be assistant HC/DC in 2008 and finished dead last at #32. In 2009 thru 2011 he was the DC for New Orleans posting NFL ratings of 8th, 16th, and 17th before the fateful suspension took him out of the league.

Here is a list of coaches he has worked for during his career:

I think that the combination of Fisher /Williams is going to be a great one. The obviously share the same love of defense and should produce a product we can be proud of…well I certainly hope they do!!!
