On Clowney and Other Abstractions......

I am ashamed to admit it, but I was on another fan site. I know, I know........shameful......I will do penance after posting this and rest assured, it will be the last time, especially after what I found there.....

In this unmentionable.com site their mock draft has us picking Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina, with our #2 overall. If the urbane, nuanced and intellectual titans of TST had not tossed this idea around, I would not feel the need to write this, but there has been some loose talk........

I am absolutely opposed to drafting Clowney for two simple, yet sublime reasons.......

1. Absolutely, no way in Hell, do I want to break up the tandem of Quinn and Long. These two have chemistry both on and off the field. They are obviously friends and and have huge respect for each other. You can see the friendly rivalry that they have. Long took obvious pride in Quinn's accomplishments this year. He wasn't jealous, as lessor prima donnas may have been, he was stoked!

This picture captures that.....

That picture just about says it all, I like it even more than the one of Robert Quinn getting carried off the field.

You can't buy that. You can't draft it. Good coaches attempt(and do attempt) to instill this into their players, but ultimately it comes down to the players themselves and sometimes, it just doesn't happen. Chemistry like that, elevates everyone around them, it inspires and motivates. That leads me to point number two......

2. Jadeveon Clowney might be a prima donna. There are many questioning his work ethic and his recent comment about wanting to be the number one overall pick in the draft is a red flag for me. Yes, any player would want that. Not only huge bragging rights for the rest of your life, but also a guaranteed and hefty paycheck. No doubt the rest of the draft class are working their butts off to place as highly as possible, why say it publicly? Just do it and let the chips fall where they may. Many teams, our Rams among them, are averse to off field issues and boundless egos. I don't know the man and I haven't seen anything outrageous from him, but there are some warning signs that his talent, no matter how great, might be more of a disruption to our team, instead of opposing O-lines.

One final note, that speaks for itself......

I couldn't find a stand alone video of the play I am trying to illustrate......skip to 9:39 for some serious serendipity......baby....
