2014 NFL Draft: A Look at the Safety Class

I am THE SAFETY - Mike Ehrmann

The biggest issue for the St. Louis Rams defense is their secondary. Some people will point to the Rams corner backs for their inconsistent play. While that's true, would head coach Jeff Fisher draft a corner back high, even though it seems that he's confident in young rookie outside corners Trumaine Johnson and Janoris Jenkins?

Maybe, but it's doubtful; but the Rams really do need a free safety. The roster is devoid of a player with elite range or with the ability to cover effectively. The Rams discovered Rodney McLeod, and he could have a good career, but will it be as a backup or starter?

So what safeties will the Rams be looking at in the 2014 NFL Draft? Well, our sister site Mocking The Draft recently made list of their top prospects by position, so here's writer Matthew Fairburn list of safeties.

1. Ha'Sean "HaHa" Clinton-Dix | 6'1, 208 pounds | Safety | Alabama *
2. Calvin Pryor | 6'2, 208 pounds | Safety | Louisville *
3. Jimmie Ward | 5'11, 192 pounds | Safety | Northern Illinois

6. Dion Bailey | 6'0, 200 pounds | Safety | Southern California *
7. Craig Loston | 6'2, 209 pounds | Safety | LSU
8. Tre Boston | 6'1, 205 pounds | Safety | North Carolina
9. Sean Parker | 5'10, 195 pounds | Safety | Washington
10. Hakeem Smith | 6'1, 197 pounds | Safety | Louisville
11. Terrence Brooks | 5'11, 200 pounds | Safety | Florida State
12. C.J. Barnett | 6'0, 202 pounds | Safety | Ohio State
13. Ed Reynolds | 6'2, 206 pounds | Safety | Stanford
14. Vinnie Sunseri | 6'0, 210 pounds | Safety | Alabama *

17. Ty Zimmerman | 6'1, 204 pounds | Safety | Kansas State
18. Isaiah Johnson | 6'2, 208 pounds | Safety | Georgia Tech
19. Nickoe Whitley | 6'1, 205 pounds | Safety | Mississippi State
20. Jerry "BooBoo" Gates | 5'11, 213 pounds | Safety | Bowling Green
21. Kenny Ladler | 6'1, 205 pounds | Safety | Vanderbilt
22. Isaiah Lewis | 5'10, 208 pounds | Safety | Michigan State
23. Brian Blechen | 6'2, 218 pounds | Safety | Utah
24. Alden Darby | 5'11, 192 pounds | Safety | Arizona State

The top 2 safeties, Alabama's' Ha'Sean "HaHa" Clinton-Dix and Calvin Pryor are both top tier players with everyone else being a notch below in talent. If the Rams choose not to draft one of those two players, they should easily find a safety to fit their need.

This week, be on the look out for Ahmad Dixon and Jimmie Ward - both are players who will be performing at the Senior Bowl this weekend.

So which of these 24 safeties would you like the Rams to select in the draft this May?
